Re: Brexit: what say ye?

Brexit is forever, and could split the country into 2-3 pieces, while also melting down the economy. Trump will either lose an election, get impeached, or finally eat one too many hamburgers. Long after Trump has gone to the big rally in the sky, the UK will still be suffering the effects of trade b...

Re: Orange is the new President

If the rest of the government says "You are no longer the President", the Secret Service will remove him by whatever appropriate means prove necessary on January 20, 2021. If the defeat is close and the GOP gets both houses of Congress, I could see them refusing to certify electors from swing states...

Re: Orange is the new President

So far, at least, we're still laboring under the assumption Trump can be voted out of office. You say that like it's a rather questionable assumption. Do you consider it plausible that he might try to stay in office via extra-legal means, whether fraud in the election or "I can't be fired! I'm in c...

Re: If We Build It, They'll Probably Still Come

Remember 2004, when everyone was arguing over whether Bush had actually described Iraqi WMD as an "imminent" threat? And everyone went around looking to see if that word had ever been uttered? When a search of transcripts failed to turn up the word "imminent", everyone concluded that Bush had not li...

*Ahem*

It depends upon whom you ask.

Also, it should go without saying that all right-minded people agree that sriracha is a superb condiment.

Re: Op-ediots

It's even worse that they combine this accidental mangling of language (I'm sure they were trying to say "comfort with") with deliberate misuse of words (e.g. redefining "white supremacy" as "anything Ta-Nehisi Coates disagrees with") and awful neologisms ("manspreading").

Re: If We Build It, They'll Probably Still Come

Don't call it "evil." Whether or not it's evil depends on your value system and you are assuming a value system. Why are you forcing your values on others?

(Seriously, the right wing sounds awfully PoMo these days.)

Re: Putin on the Writs

If I know that somebody attempted a crime that could have hurt my rival and benefited me, there's no need to support any efforts to prevent them from attempting it again. And seeing anything corrupt in this just means that you're some sort of crazy person. But, as I think about it. I shouldn't chara...

Don't say "insidious." It makes you sound conspiratorial and then we can't take you seriously anymore. I, for one, believe that everything is absolutely fine. Because I want people to take me seriously. It's all great. People tell me, great people, they tell me things are just amazing. Bigly. There,...

To be fair, the article doesn't make it clear whether the election-day malfunctions were due to Russian hacking of the vendor, or were just normal malfunctions and the Russian efforts were ineffective. But this is one of those things where (1) we shouldn't find out the hard way (i.e. elections shoul...

Really, so far I like Amash better than I like both Pauls put together, but that also speaks to how little I think of those grifters, anymore.

I'm honestly not so thrilled with the idea of the US planting malware in the Russian electric grid. We shouldn't be escalating.

Seems odd to talk to the NYT if you’re worried about the president blabbing. I suspect they’re fine with the general thrust being public, otherwise why leak. The reason you leak is so that the president can’t cancel the program.

Don't forget STEAM and STREAM.
My wife's school does STEAM. I hadn't heard of STREAM until just right now. Looked it up, and said 'really?'
STREAM should not be crossed. It would be bad.

Whatever you think about gender identity, the authoritarianism of the teacher, or the defiance of the student, I just wish that the schoolteacher with the thick Scottish accent had closed with "If you don't respect gender you can't have any pudding! STEM is whatever a person needs it to be. On a 4 year campus, auto repair is not STEM. At a community college it totally is...at least in certain parts of the campus. Social scientists say that they are in STEM. Other STEM folks say that only the natural sciences are in STEM. If people want to brag ...

Quillette has an article by a guy questioning claims of sexual harassment in physics: https://quillette.com/2019/06/13/an-unhelpful-study-about-women-in-physics/ He has some plausible points, but I'm open to a critique that he goes too far the other way. To be fair, he also cited some articles from the cardiology literature, arguing that they are focusing on problems that are not representative of the bigger picture. The family BBQ was just a segue into the topic. What I don't know is whether or not there's actually something wrong with the cardiolo...
