Re: Damn database problems

I think we should pressure the Ukrainians to investigate what is wrong with the server.

Re: Brexit: what say ye?

By "parliamentary rules" I assume you mean "proportional representation." You can certainly elect the House proportionally without having them choose a PM. And there are plenty of scales on which PR can operate. In some places it's country-wide (e.g. Israel). In some places each state/province/canto...

Re: Brexit: what say ye?

I agree that this is not about parliamentary vs presidential systems. We didn't always have 2+ years of presidential campaigning, and there are other presidential systems that manage to do without that. It's a political culture thing that has changed before and I hope it changes again.

Perhaps we ought to come up with a Grylliade Escape Plan, in case we ever need to abandon this platform.
I think we have to ask the Ukrainians to help us figure out what's going on with the server.

Re: Brexit: what say ye?

All I know is that two years is way too long for a presidential campaign. Other countries run analogous campaigns in less time. Surely there must be ways to move in that direction.

Re: Orange is the new President

Kim Jong Un is quite canny in manipulating Trump. I guess Un knows a thing or two about pudgy, powerful, paranoid men who got where they are because of their fathers.

I'm not sure how Iran has avoided Trump's wrath. Maybe his handlers deserve credit for that one.

Re: Orange is the new President

I underestimated, as I suspect everyone did, his obliviousness and indifference to the rule of law is and grudgingly have to give him credit for using what unchecked executive powers he does have as well ('well' being contextual here) as he has. He's under-performing relative to my paranoia, but is...

If people thought that Trump was a moderate then it just reinforces my conviction that democracy should be abolished, and the First Amendment should no longer apply to Twitter and Facebook.

We should go back to monarchy.

Let’s say it were explicit, Comey has an email saying we’ll get this fucker he can’t be president. Is that a comparable issue of abuse?
Yes. Is there any evidence of such a thing?

BTW, I completely agree that James Comey should not be FBI Director.

Follow up, can one be especially bothered by levers of foreign policy being pulled for political dirt digging if one shrugs at FISA monitoring under false pretenses to the same ends? I'm not going to defend the FBI, but you can't reasonably equate the pre-November 2016 investigations with Trump ask...

Re: Orange is the new President

Nakedly racist arguments against immigration have always had more right-wing baggage than left-wing baggage. Yes, there are immigration restrictionists on the left, but they know not to say certain things. Republicans mostly also know not to say those things, but they come closer to saying them. Whe...

Extremism on immigration was the defining issue of his campaign from day 1. He said that Mexico was sending us rapists and kept talking about his stupid wall. If you want to argue that some scorecard filled out via an algorithm devised in 2014 would not classify him as extremist, well, fine. All sor...

Your mountains so lofty, your treetops so tall

A couple days ago I posted a Finland article, and now I learn that they have the world's youngest PM. So now I need to need a thread for them.
Ms. Marin has been a rising star in Finland’s Social Democratic Party since first entering Parliament in 2015.
I'm sure this will work out great.

They need to either run Diamond Joe (an old scoundrel who is unimpressed by Biff) or somebody who can help America move past the 80's movie and be like "Oh, yeah, we've ceded 21st century America to a cheesy 80's character. Enough of this shit." Klobuchar seems suitably boring and unimpressed. And i...

Re: We can win the war in Vietnam!

Parts of Afghanistan have done OK in the Persian Empire, but nobody in the US is interested in handing territory to Iran.

The harsher terrain in Afghanistan should just be annexed and folded into West Virginia. It would be a better fit than most people are willing to acknowledge.
