Re: What if it all goes wrong? (2016 Edition)

It took me three thread uodate reads to realize one of the names was the Secretary of Transportation, and not a misspelling of chaos.

Re: What if it all goes wrong? (2016 Edition)

Although a great "what if it all goes wrong" double secret conspiracy theory is this: he was in league with the Clintons to throw the election to Hillary...but once he realized he was within striking distance of actually winning, he decided to double-cross his co-conspirators and stab them in the b...

You mean the treaty alliance they're not a party to? Tbf, neither were Kosovo nor Libya. eta - to also be fair, I'm sorta surprised Russia hasn't been more agressive over the past year. Either they are already getting everything they want, or they are genuinely worried about a counter (i.e. anti-Ru...

So, I shipped the saddle off today. To my absolute astonishment, I discovered that if I declared that it had any value at all, I would have to pay US customs duty on the value of the saddle . This is a saddle that I paid US$4,250 for five years ago to an American company - the same company that I a...

Even on this ethical playing field, it's hard to call it 'an agressive war'. The two sides were already at war, we just picked a side.

It's not a war crime. It's an act of war, with dubious constutional authority, but it's not a war crime.

The dem's press releases have used the exact same language 'repeal Citizen's United' so it's not that NPR is misparsing it. The most charitable take is that House will pass a campaign finance law that threads the needle between what CU outright prohibits and what a GOP controlled legislature has bee...

Re: Powerful Mice in Space (The New Star Wars Gripe Thread)

Saw Solo last night. It was ok, but I can see now why it wasn't a bigger hit despite a non-trivial amount of star power. It asks a lot of Alden Ehrenreich who doesn't quite have enough of the easy charisma required to pull it off.

(It also takes out too many characters before the final act)

I'm not that worried about the first thing, in that if we're not already planning for adversaries to do that, we're already hosed. I downloaded the report to read myself, but pre-emptive thoughts are 1) we've been in a 'great power' conflict with China since the 90s - or at least keeping an eye on t...

A stage production of Sound of Music is on PBS right now, it's near the end when the Von Trapps are hiding in the Abbey after the concert - and my dog just started barking at the Nazi dogs. So I guess she's Antifa?

There was a time when 'wall to wall carpeting' was considered a feature, and some people just don't ever want their feet to touch anything hard. To the point that some psychotic fuckers put installed carpeting in fucking bathrooms. My parent's house had this. Carpet over the hardwood floors and car...

Housing prices are officially bonkers right now. There's an 80-year-old, 672-sq ft house in South St. Paul listed for $190K. (I know in some areas that would be a steal in any market, but this is the redneck boondocks of the St. Paul metro, and also it's ST PAUL, not Portland or some shit.) It does...

It is possible this is like ST:TNG - 18 years after the original series, they at first recycle a lot of the same plots at first. Eventually, though, they finally find their own voice and put out something worthwhile.
