Re: Home $weet Home

I now own a townhouse somewhere between 3 to 4 miles of Bezoworld South. I kinda feel like we dodged that bullet. I'm against the corporate giveaway on principle, but it doesn't look as bad as it could have been There seems to be parts of it that can actually be construed as public goods (i.e. tran...

English speakers (and esp writers) should be the last to complain about leftover legacy quirks of language.

Sorry to hear about Ayleen.

A stage production of Sound of Music is on PBS right now, it's near the end when the Von Trapps are hiding in the Abbey after the concert - and my dog just started barking at the Nazi dogs. So I guess she's Antifa?

Re: Home $weet Home

There was a time when 'wall to wall carpeting' was considered a feature, and some people just don't ever want their feet to touch anything hard. To the point that some psychotic fuckers put installed carpeting in fucking bathrooms. My parent's house had this. Carpet over the hardwood floors and car...

Re: Home $weet Home

Housing prices are officially bonkers right now. There's an 80-year-old, 672-sq ft house in South St. Paul listed for $190K. (I know in some areas that would be a steal in any market, but this is the redneck boondocks of the St. Paul metro, and also it's ST PAUL, not Portland or some shit.) It does...

Re: Vote or Die

It is possible this is like ST:TNG - 18 years after the original series, they at first recycle a lot of the same plots at first. Eventually, though, they finally find their own voice and put out something worthwhile.

We'll eat at the dining room table when we have people over, but we're also eat at the TV people. We tried to do the sit down thing shortly after we were married, and that lasted about 3 days.

I think, T, you overestimate the competence of the replacement level Governor. Yeah, you got your Jerry Browns, even your Larry Hogans, but you also have your Sarah Palins and Blagos.

Re: Vote or Die

Reds and Blues are similar in a great many ways. Gerrymandering is one. Fiscal irresponsibility is another. Ditto for many civil liberties issues. But I am struggling to think of a case where a Blue-dominated state has tried to make voting harder in ways that would tighten their grip on power. Not,...

Really? You think we should vote on who the County Registrar of Deeds is?
I support un-unity of the executive at all levels, and de-unifying it where it exists.

Regardless of the source of the malfunction, I've never understood what is wrong with simple paper ballots. Analog backup, lots of transparency, unhackable. Paper ballots are fine when you are voting for one position (e.g. in a Westminister Style Parliamentary election), but when you are voting for...

Most of the ex-Soviet states get along fine with Moscow. The Baltics are the big exception; Georgia and Ukraine are smaller exceptions to the extent that their attitude towards Moscow shift with internal political shifts. (most of the other ex-Soviet states have been constant autocrats, so that hasn...
