Re: Good Cover Versions

The internet says that the Indigo Girls is an all female band. I don't know if that's right, it could be. I would have guessed they were like Veruca Salt or Heart. (i.e. the women are the front and the soul of the band, but they had other musicians of all genders backing them when performing) I wou...

Re: OFFS: The Forsakening

That’s a lot of disagreement. I was surprised by Autor It wasn't universal, but do you think the distribution would look like that for licensing the presidential barber? Well, again, you're going to get repsonses like : they're already doing such a shit job, and Donald is going to keep on doing wha...

Re: Whither the GOP? (post-Trump edition)

I am still convinced that Trump will be a long-term disaster for the GOP. I think the GOP is going to lose control of both houses over the 2018 and 2020 election cycles. Get set for a decade of Team Blue rule. The only thing keeping Team Blue together is "Hey, we're not the overt bigots" - which is...

Re: OFFS: The Forsakening

I'm not sure if everyone answered the question they thought they were answering (or we think they are answering). For instance Kenneth Judd Stanford Strongly Disagree 8 Let POTUS choose the people he wants. His choices will face public scrutiny. Besides, there is a big supply of craven incompetent P...

that was great. They're really aren't enough woman-fronted rock bands these days.

It is exactly what people are doing when asked "What's the legal basis for deploying ground troops to Syria?"

I mean, Deplorably Scottish has a point? It does look like that guy more than anyone who's been a runner-up in a Superbowl or the Oscars?

Re: This is the thread for people who died, died.

I'm glad to see Night Court getting its due; I always thought the internet under rated it, overshadowed by Cheers and Seinfeld. (and, once upon a time, Cosby) eta - I am weird though, that I loved Harry Anderson, and I love Dave Barry, but didn't care for Dave's World at all. Apparently, the interne...

Re: Alternate histories

I gotta think continental drift goes completely different (but not necessarily just 'the opposite') if the earth's spin is reversed. I doubt it. Coriolis effects are pretty tiny compared to the forces at work in tectonics, especially at the very low relative velocities. It makes a difference in flu...

Re: Twitter!

I had an outstanding AP history teacher (one of the three best high school teachers I ever had), but he hardly used the textbook (if there was ever one), he just lectured, but in a storytelling fashion (I just realized he was podcasting 20 years before that was a thing)

Re: Twitter!

I might have a skewed point of view, because in Virginia in the late 80s, between the King's Dominion rule (school starting after labor day), a May exam, and an outsized module on the Civil War, we barely got to WW2. I think called it a wrap at Vietnam (which was basically only we came, we saw, we l...

I don't think I'm up to that point, but the entire town seems a lot more demographically dynamic than the typical town in that part of Appalachia ie there's way too many people between the ages of 25 to 45. (Though maybe my view is warped from living at the bottom of the birthrate trough in a stagna...

Re: A thread for mocking politicians

Can I say I think it's overblown even if a neat historical footnote? I mean, most congresscritters aren't participating actively in the baby making process because the vast majority are over 40 and have done most of their baby assembling work (which is easier for some than others to be sure) before ...
