If you do put the moon close enough over Miami, the gravitational force will lift everything up.

"What is is this, a seawall for ants?!" But seriously, what sealevel rise does is not so much on the static, that is mean level, but makes the maximums during tidal cycle variations and storm surges even higher (& even more extreme when they happen together) It also causes salinity gradient in tidal...

Re: Putin on the Writs

Because Trump wants credit for 'making things happen' that seem like wins for 'peace' but are really the most superficial parts of international relations. Putin probably wants back into the G7/8 for the diplomatic win, no doubt, but in the scheme of things, these days that would be such a minor thi...

Re: Legion's air disease is all in your head (spoilers)

Finally caught up with the end of this. I can't deny their ambition, and appreciate them swinging for the fences. The ending is very comic book-y, but I think that it works on a meta level - and would be a big cop out if tried in any other situation. I was definitely missing Audrey Plaza down the st...

New Study Reveals Dark Matter May Have Predated the Big Bang Ow, my brain! The novel study employs a simple mathematical framework to illustrate that dark matter may have been produced before the Big Bang. More specifically, it would have come into existence during an era known as the cosmic inflat...

I didn't know there was that much argon floating around.
Never exposed to navy nuke ELT calculations? For the purposes of radcon math, air is 80% Nitrogen, 20% Oxygen, and 1% Argon. (And yes, it's not supposed to add up to 100%)

Re: What are you reading?

I started George F. Will's The Conservative Sensibility , but I'm frankly bogged down by his reliance on natural rights arguments to make his case. That said, Will's writing is always pellucid if a bit precious for my tastes. Strange that anyone as educated as Will takes the notion of natural right...

That's a really interesting article, Highway. (Pity about the terminology, because that's going to get it misused and misunderstood. It's like there's a rule that social researchers have to use the worst terms they can find when they describe a phenomenon. Just thinking about it, "parochial" vs, "c...

I rarely assign students to peer review each other's drafts, but when I do, (1) I see the benefits accruing to the reviewer more than the reviewed and (2) I still provide my own critique of the draft rather than trusting California public high school graduates to provide useful feedback. San Dimas ...
