Re: Orange is the new President

I mean, the entire political-military establishment has not covered itself with glory over the last 20 years. It has continually exaggerated successes and lied about failures to both the public, and worst to itself. Trump hasn't changed a thing about that - and in many ways, has made it worse - but ...

Mattis’ civilian and post-administration behavior seems to show that Trump’s assessment was accurate. Which particular one? I wouldn't go as far as to call Mattis 'a dope', but it increasely clear that he was singularly unsuited for being Defense Secretary and his reputation is both overinflated an...

C'mon guys, you want a repeat of Endor? When the Military Industrial Complex spent a gazillion credits on a(nother) Super Space Laser but Da Troops(TM) still had uniforms leftover from the Hoth operation?

For the record, I know it's a shithole. They dont. Russia's probably not a shithole if your a Muscovite with an ok job and no real strong political opinions. It's probably even better if you're in Saint Pete. Eta- and if you're like 50, it's probably less a shithole than it was when you were thirty.

Bus for sale: Runs and drives perfect, transmission shifts perfect. Ice cold AC in rear. Heat front and rear. Child restaurants. Are Child restaurants places where children eat or places where they are eaten? Depends on whether you're able to pay the bill. Pic of the bus - Screenshot_20200118-14575...

I think I'm more offended that Tom Sawyer is the first Rush song on the list. Forty years of music, and that middling song is all most people know of the band. I want to say Spirit of the Radio got more mainstream radio play (because irony has in fact always been dead), but I remember Tom Sawyer be...

One thing I didn't appreciate about geology until recently is that uplift is as important as erosion. For instance rivers on the US east coast that seem to cut thru mountain ranges (like the Potomac does near Harpers Ferry) is because the river was there first, and the mountains grew up around it - ...

1) the absolutely highest casualty rates were the 20 something year old junior officers commissioned out of the landed gentry.
2) 3 longstanding autocratic empires completely collapsed, and a 4th autocratic relatively new empire/nation-state also had its government system replaced.

What's vexing about some of the discourse surounding this movie is that WW1 was the most elite leveling & decapitating thing in Europe since the Black Death.

Change of commands are officially performed by two officers facing each other, saying "I am ready to relieve you." "I am ready to be relieved" "I relieve you" " I stand relieved" with a salute & return salute.

'Swearing on the Bible' is not used in any oath ceremony (enlistment/commisioning/promotion) that I am familiar with across the services. You normally need a flag, and it's useful to have at least one hand that you can raise (so Jaimie Lannister, you're still good), but that's about it.

I think it's very unlikely that Putin wants anything else but Russian being Great with Putin in charge. Putin's been there since late 99. If he were actually trying for a managed transition a la Spain or Portugal (or even Nicaragua under Noriega), he would have continued to step back and/or slide in...

There's no way a bobcat is going to become a senator and then the president. Only 14 out of 45 presidents had previously served in the senate.
Actually, the problem is that the bobcat is in DC, DC only has a 'shadow Senator', and that's more of groundhog thing.

I agree with Robby Soave: https://twitter.com/robbysoave/status/1209319975917367296?s=19 My contrary opinion is that I wish they would have made a tiny but clear opening on the evil that still exists.
