Re: I don't wanna see that!!!!

Ready Player One looks dumb. At some point we need to have a year zero on pop culture nostalgia. I dunno. It looks okay, but probably too young for my geezer tastes. I like the way Iron Giant has become a 'we nerds know it's good' thing. As for pop culture nostalgia, year zero would have to predate...

Re: 17-Year-Old Says 'I Could Buy an AR-15,' Gets Arrested

All the people saying the FBI dropped the ball on the kid in Florida, was he doing anything illegal that the FBI could have credibly done to stop him? The guns were obtained legally. Investigate and find out he was planning a shooting. He would have stepped over the "attempt" line at some point and...

Re: Masculinity, so fragile

The "old wisdom" being what, "it's cool to rape a chick as long as you marry her when one of the kids you father on her crawls up and sucks the splinter out of her finger and she wakes up?" It was helpfully explicated by one of the Reddit commenters: in Sleeping Beauty, the masculine represents civ...

. . . even if it stars Jeffrey Tambor, who is now being airbrushed out of the promotional materials.
That would be the best sick joke ever. One poster featuring him with the cast and the same one where he's been removed.

Re: To Infinity War and Beyond: the MCU Thread with Spoilers

The split makes sense, but the conflict is dumb. Every conflict they mention in the movie is one where no one would reasonably choose different. I think was all "everyone dies unless we act now" except for the one about the bioweapon at the beginning of the movie, which still seems like the right ca...

Re: I may want to see that?

Woo that guy murdered and starved and imprisoned a lot of people guys. He's at least the Dan Marino of totalitarian murderers and I give him no credit for intent. His inadvertent starvation is just as bad as his deliberate actions. If we are playing hypotheticals, does a hitler win preclude a stali...

Yeah, no. As bad as Stalin was, he wasn't planning on slowly starving off the entire population of Eastern Europe over several decades.

FFS FFF, the best day under stalin is really really bad dude.
Look, the Soviet Union did two impressive things: universal literacy and crushing the Nazis. The second likely would not have happened had Stalin been removed during the initial phase of the war.

Re: This Life is Absurd

I thought Kung Fury was great. But the thing I always say about it is that it knew that it couldn't be any longer than it was, and if it had been stretched out to a feature film length it'd've been terrible. I guess we'll find out. Yeah. I didn't think it could have been a full ninety minutes. But ...

Re: I may want to see that?

I would look askance at the nature of the thing Russia became after being "saved". In the sense that it was a sovereign political entity, I guess. In the sense that the things of value were preserved? Hardly. It became a horror show. Became a horror show? The worst time under Stalin was before the ...

Re: Masculinity, so fragile

The intentional versus unintentional distinction is weird. I think Gone With the Wind is highly political, though I can also see how it may be that no thought went into that, but, like a buddy cop movie, it promotes a certain outlook as good and normal. Also, his "promotes a higher truth" is nonsens...

Guernica was mentioned in the Reddit thread and one of the commenters (not Peterson) affirms that it is not art.
I'm not going to go down that rabbit hole, but is the commenter the kind of person who would call it "degenerate art?"

https://youtu.be/blTglME9rvQ I think Peterson seems like a loon with respect to his attitudes toward women and sexual harassment. His complaint about hugging rules at NBC is dumb. People shouldn't hug in a professional context anyways. His audience would probably get more out of reading the Article ...

On a side note, I am amused by the "Make Russia Great Again" types on the internet who are claiming a) that the movie is all lies, b) that Stalin saved Russia, c) that Stalin hardly killed anybody*, and d) reports of Stalin's crimes are Western Fabrications. b) is true though. At that point it may ...

The NYT is hiring a columnist who is friends with a Nazi. The Weapon is hiring Megan McCardle. Opinion pages should be eliminated.
