Re: Observations of the Random sort

First world growth is structurally low. I've seen no evidence that the wise men who despise the US have answers. The debt markets, currency exchange, rates of unemployment, and relative rates of growth suggest if the US is doing it wrong the people who pity the US are doing it worse, so maybe they s...

Re: Observations of the Random sort

The biggest question of all is how did even moderate nationalism become completely taboo? Who decided that raising the incomes of billions of people worldwide was the moral imperative? Now that climate change is a reality, and mass immigration will result, who feels smug about that? Try to build a ...

Podcasts - Watcha listening to?

Econtalk with Russ Roberts is mandatory. Hard Core History is too long but pretty good. Planet Money is a bit light on stuff right now but they did the best surveys of the 2008 financial crisis and some of the best reporting in healthcare.

Re: Worthwhile intertubez finds

Credit is a risk reward financial exchange. Systems that identify real risks to allow for pricing of such are good. Systems that misrepresent risk and cause perverse pricing are bad. I don’t get how social credit scores would be good in this regard but if they help more accurately priced transaction...

Team keyboard tray is awful.

ETA: what do tray people do with their elbows? Is the mouse on the same level as the tray or above on the desk where there's room? Whole thing seems alien and painful to me.

Re: Net Neutrality

If Madison River was allowed to block VoIP traffic, do you think we end up where we are with that sort of technology or do corporates 100% stick to PBX? I think that’s a fair point. We don’t get where we are under title 2 and we don’t get where we are with no consumer actions. What I’m saying is th...

Re: Net Neutrality

The mostly and the terms under which targeted actions were taken matter. It was not a title 2 common carrier until 2015. Title 2 didn’t apply to IP networks because Pulver et al got exemption in 2004. So going back to title 2 is supposed to make voip type innovations more likely?

Re: Net Neutrality

My basic thing is if attaining NN also entails the full suite of Title 2 regulatory authority, you have to do a pretty good job convincing me that the essence of permissionless innovation that carried the internet to its state through June 2015 is not threatened by that broad regulatory environment....

Re: Worthwhile intertubez finds

I don’t know why the variable pricing would persist in a competitive rates environment. I can’t imagine real risk sufficient for some bank to hold the line on high rates for ok fundamentals but social nightmare guy. Credit union goes, meh lower rate come here, Big Bank goes “nope! Too much risk look...

Re: Worthwhile intertubez finds

I'm not sure I see a business case in the US. In parts of asia there's still this idea of "do you have someone rich or prominent who will vouch for you" so there's already this odd kind of social agreement about credit worthiness thing. Deal is, if the market for loans is large and competitive, I ca...

Massive brawn to go with our massive brains

Yoga music and yoga voice are the reasons I don’t take yoga classes.

And yoga woo. Can’t we just say we are strength stretching? No? Karma up in the yoni? ok then.

Re: Inequality

I’d be fine with “the persistence of regional poverty in developed countries may surprise some Here is what it looks like in several places - Alabama, rural Spain and Italy, France, the UK etc. Here are factors in each place including government efforts.”

Inequality

Overall I do not dispute that Alabama is shitty. Obviously so. The harder thing is to digest the intra country variances in standard of living - which are quite large in developed countries. Rural shitholes are shockingly not what you might expect in many countries. I’m more familiar with Appalachia...
