Re: Food

I have a pork, um, adobo thing working that is pretty nuts. Partially ottolenghi inspired from the flavors in a lentil soup of his I made. 5 guajillos, 2 anchos, 3 chipotle in adobo and a tbsp of aji amarillo paste form the chili base. I added to this base about 1/3c chopped medjool dates - replacin...

Re: Occam, Trump, and Russia

Nothing has persuasive power. The only thing that used to have persuasive power was shame. We live in a post shame world where the people get what they want - technological, media, academic and social forces aligning to make any retarded view in the world socially acceptable. While gotcha can be unf...

Re: There must be a pony in here somewhere.

Ill believe it’s funded by tax s on the rich when I see that. The primary constraint has always been that wonks know you have to fund deep into the tax base. Germans pay like 15% even at low income levels. Medicare EE+ER is 2.9%. That’s a big fucking tax hike.

Re: Food

root vegetables can last in the sense that they are soft but not mush. carrots, parsnips, potatoes/sweet potatoes of course, celery root, yucca, uh ... stuff like that. Most other vegetables you intend to have structure can be added in the last 30 minutes or, maybe even better, sauteed with a pinch ...

Re: Masculinity, so fragile

War is a bad metaphor from where I'm sitting. Some expectations of others are reasonable and things to which you might want to aspire. Some are unreasonable or completely shtty. It is not a surrender to hold yourself to a standard of evaluating these as they are presented. Rote rejection seems just ...

That’s not all that shocking. They had information that it was a differently colored person so applied a simple exclusion test. Better than dragging everyone in for further questioning.

Re: Masculinity, so fragile

I think the Nicolean view of identity is a bit wack. In the zone between blowing in the breeze of public opinion like POTUS and atomic identity "real self" that can only be constant or betrayed, is a place where feedback from idea exposure, events, and yea social interactions shift the view of self ...

Re: Masculinity, so fragile

Overall he has a set of concerns I share - I do think people are babies about gratification and the expectation of an other to solve their suffering. I do think there is a toxicity to the conversations of the left and that the current state of discouraging critical thinking by suppressing speech is ...

Re: Masculinity, so fragile

I find it refreshing that someone looks at problems that people express themselves, and then looks for accessible frames of reference to present solutions in a digestible format. I don't think he is forcing specific universal truths at all, rather, I think he is pointing out ideas that can form a f...

Re: Masculinity, so fragile

His thing on logos and the sense in which genesis is true is pretty awful. He seems oblivious to the baggage he’s bringing to the analysis to selectively force fit stories into universal truths. He’s finding universals because he’s imposing a worldview on those stores that makes literary references ...

Re: Masculinity, so fragile

It can both be true that naive optimism is a common view that needs a corrective and that the person telling you the real deal is life is misery is trying to sell you a remedy that is fairly dramatic (because all is misery so remedy must be proportionately Heavy).

Masculinity, so fragile

I would observe that if the view “life is happiness” is the view of a 3 year old, “life is suffering” is the the view of a 13 year old emo kid. Life contains both and obviously so - why the binary, bro?

Re: Masculinity, so fragile

About :30 in so far. I don’t like the way he presents “one way to think about a thing is X” as “x is a fact”. It is a disease of social psych types, religious types and self help types and he’s at that nexus. I don’t disagree with a set of general propositions starting with people generally act like...

Re: Masculinity, so fragile

What is the Venn diagram of people who listen to EconTalk who don't have access to Peterson's podcast/lectures except by YouTube? His audio is on all the usual apps/services. I mean probably me. I never go to anyone's youtube channel because they are to a first order estimate 100% garbage. Get off ...

Re: I may want to see that?

Nobody engages in hitler reclamation projects - but that shit happens all the times with leftist monsters starting with Stalin. Yeah, the problem in modern society is not "there's too much widespread socially-accepted support of Hitler and too extreme damnation of Stalin." There's the right damnati...

Re: To Infinity War and Beyond: the MCU Thread with Spoilers

Civil War is near the worst of them. The central conflict is contrived and the major plot points near the end made my eyes roll down the street to get a beer by themselves.

Re: Masculinity, so fragile

The "old wisdom" being what, "it's cool to rape a chick as long as you marry her when one of the kids you father on her crawls up and sucks the splinter out of her finger and she wakes up?" It was helpfully explicated by one of the Reddit commenters: in Sleeping Beauty, the masculine represents civ...

Re: I may want to see that?

The Communist murders were also far less thorough --the gulag for all its horror wasn't an extermination camp. Jews in Soviet Russia and Commie Europe in general certainly had a bad time of it with some of them being murdered, but Communism never tried to systematically wipe all ALL of them the way...

Woo that guy murdered and starved and imprisoned a lot of people guys. He's at least the Dan Marino of totalitarian murderers and I give him no credit for intent. His inadvertent starvation is just as bad as his deliberate actions. If we are playing hypotheticals, does a hitler win preclude a stalin...
