Re: Thar's Silicon In Them Thar Hills - Westworld w/ spoilers

I've watched S2E8 Kiksuya twice and I believe it to be on par with the best single tv episodes I've seen all time. Mad Men suitcase, Sopranos Pine Barrens, Wire Season 3 crescendo ep I forget the name, etc

Re: If We Build It, They'll Probably Still Come

“What if I told you every criminal conviction separates families?”

So maybe doing more of that doesn’t make you a good guy? If you changed enforcement of jay walking to mandatory imprisonment and we saw kids crying while parents in cages - that wouldn’t make you the hero of the story.

Re: If We Build It, They'll Probably Still Come

My favorite/not favorite iteration of that is the "crime wave" that rolled across the EU "directly traceable to illegal immigrants and refugees". To get the crime wave they counted the infraction of being in the country without paperwork. Look a crime wave. Ugh.

Re: Food

Some cuts refresh fast, others less fast. It is comparable to my experiences with non grocery butchery. They have the cows and they sell the bits and then they get more cows and more bits. Also, just wrapped fathers day weekend.

Re: Food

Fathers Day was my first time using Porter Road as an online butcher. Got a giant flap steak and some skirt and did chimichurri. Very, very good. They do several smart things like standardizing cost per cut rather than selling by weight. They control lifecycle feed of all butchered animals and do na...

It’s also a disease of the conservative instincts around thin veneer of civilization/slippery slope to chaos. It has a long history. I'd have a lot more respect for "law and order" types if they held LEOs to the same standard. It’s authoritarian down in its bones. They Do What Needs to be Done.

Speaking of unfair cash grabs - doing medium tonnage rated missions with assault mechs is pretty gratifying as cash grabs go. Oh no 2 shadow hawks appear on the flank of my Highlander w/ gauss rifle!

Re: OFFS: The Forsakening

There are layers of this thing to me. 1) do I have an obligation to proactively seek out the politics / ethical stances of vendors of goods and services? No. I do not feel any need at all to do that. 2) If I happen to find out about something that I find disturbing, do I have an obligation to protes...

Straight talk fyodor - you are neutral between the ideas that people saying Brett Weinstein's response to their day of absence was a) actually increasing their risk of being killed (they said this) and b) were making a non issue into a life threatening issue so they could exercise power? Is there n...

Re: OFFS: The Forsakening

I note a distinct lack of worry about risk items unrelated to politics among the crowd in question. Mommies worry about everything for their precious children. Poisons, stranger danger, etc. The white male supremacy is murdering me through culture crowd ... it's a pretty targeted sort of mean world,...

The Cowen plan is what the Cowen plan always is - make a point you think is under discussed with an overly cutesy post.

No identifiable risk is tolerable and danger is everywhere. I think there are elements who do not believe notably higher risk ...

The thing about the mean world take is it presumes people invoking these things actually believe in the mean world. They don't. They just like being able to act like everything they dislike is actually in real life a threat so they can use social sanction, policy or even law to get their way. On wh...

Right. But it’s like with the bags. In theory they’re supposed to make people who don’t fit buy two seats. In theory they’re supposed to not let you carry on stuff that doesn’t fit. But they don’t do either because there would be a huge angry outcry. So you constantly miss taking off on time becaus...
