Question: how do you get "i don't want to be a farmer out in the sticks" modernist inclined guy to consider being a farmer out in the sticks? Re: Inequality

My sense is there's some handwaving in that position. The "substantial even for unskilled labor" part of it. I have a view of entry positions in a handful of businesses I've worked with and how regional variances look these days - say last 10 years. There is a considerable amount of migration of ent...

Re: Surprise! It's Government's Good Side

I should clarify, my actual preference set is crappy benefit levels funded by forced savings with real differences in retirement lifestyle funded by elections to save - so I'm not at this point going to get rid of social security or replace it with personal accounts. I just don't want it to be anyth...

Re: Inequality

Time Square Starbucks has latte at same price as my local Starbucks. Bottom line, though, I think this is more obvious than you guys are suggesting. There is simply less flex in lower skill positions due to both a greater pool of talent and the products very often being limited in price variance for...

You can do salary on like glassdoor. There is a variance in median barista wages between Cincinnati and Chicago. but it's maybe 10% compared to hyuuge variances in cost of living.

Re: Surprise! It's Government's Good Side

I obviously have a vested interest in tax advantaged savings - but this is too goofy even for me. Health and retirement saving, MAYBE education - that's it. I will say though, that I'm fine with the idea that there shouldn't be tax advantaged savings if I get to live in the world where nobody cries ...

Re: Inequality

The thing I don’t understand about the relocation story, still, is that you don’t make the same money in a cheap place. I mean I get the part about moving from a rural area with no jobs to a city. I just don’t get the part about leaving large cities for smaller ones as if it’s just a cost of living...

Re: Inequality

There are a whole lot of mid sized cities with jobs tho. If I'm taking the crapshoot of moving away from my support structure, why would I head for a place with fewer jobs and less infrastructure to offset what I'm losing by moving away from current support? Because there isn't much of a plausible ...

Re: Inequality

Don’t know that I have a solution, but it certainly isn’t putting non academically inclined people into 4 year programs. It would look more like trying to get those people trained into skills with market demand. Lots of medical stuff. Relocation is also a part of that story. And the high costs/debt...

That should take about 20 more movies, but the dramatic tension is lessened because he can always use the pig gem to unslaughter his pal Wilbur.

Re: Inequality

I’m not an avotoast determinist. I’m mostly a guy who thinks the bulk of the structural issue is related to non degree holders, with an effect on degree holders where certain graduation dates were set back due to the effects of 2007. 2010 and later graduates aren’t doing that bad as a cohort. It is ...

Re: Inequality

There are a lot of things being squished together in that kind of analysis. I think the real story, most of it, is the uniquely bad situation those without degrees but with student debt are facing and further the stagnation of wages for HS diploma only types. The people who have 4 year degrees start...

Also, weird tangent: I've a few times run into European lefties online who went on about how minimum wage laws don't exist in Europe because unions negotiate minimum wages privately. Naturally, this is completely false, with most European countries having statutory minimum wages, but I wonder how s...

Re: Inequality

More seriously, I saw this the other day, and it makes me laugh. I got my degree in 1995, which probably is one reason I sneer a bit about new graduate salaries being SOO low. I made about $40,000 in Japan from 1996-1998, returned home, blah blah, got a job at current employer 1999 at starting wage ...

Re: I wanna see that!!!!

I definitely have a visual entertainment problem these days. I'm tired of zombies, vampires, serial killers (above all serial killers), superheroes, Massive CGI Spectacles. Broader categories are "Things that won't die even though they've been repetitive for 3 seasons / sequels". I'm not tired of bu...

Kulturkampf? In my NFL? It's more likely than you think. Football 2018

I’ve never been clear how collusion would look different from “football fans be all like ‘Murica” + “we spent a decade being a brand that fellates uniforms and that’s off brand.”
