Re: What becomes of the broken hearted... and homeless?!?

An ordinance will be voted on in a couple of weeks in Denver regarding the homeless. Shall the voters of the City and County of Denver adopt a measure that secures and enforces basic rights for all people within the jurisdiction of the City and County of Denver, including the right to rest and shel...

Re: Occam, Trump, and Russia

I thought I heard that Barr said something about laws regarding secrecy of the grand jury, and I wasn't sure what the hell that was about, but maybe it's pretty much just the same thing in different window dressing.... Well, if there's an ongoing grand jury, then you can't share that info while the...

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

I feel like 90% of pro-EC arguments are pure inertia arguments. If we were in a pure PV system for the last 200 years, no one would say the EC is a clearly superior method and we should go back to that. Or that states should adopt weighting by county for gubernatorial races. Nate Silver has been co...

Re: Occam, Trump, and Russia

So, does anyone know the legitimate reasons for not releasing the entire report? BTW, regarding what "collusion means", I would think that's where DAR's insistence on "stipulatively defined terms" (ironically, spellcheck doesn't like "stipulatively"!) would actually finally carry some relevance (gri...

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

Also - this thing where don’t worry it totally won’t have the effect conservatives worry about - I’d like to put liberals supporting pv on the truth serum there. We all know they think it helps them right? And I thought I already addressed this!! A) Who cares what they say? B) It's normal and perfe...

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

Say, was ruralness versus urbanness as such ever an issue for the founders even for Congress (and even based on their propaganda)? I'm way too lazy to lookit up, but my offhand guess is that the nation was so predominantly rural back then that the relative size of states' populations may have had mu...

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

The odd thing is the defenders talk about the intent of the founders while simultaneously making an argument the founders never made. The founders’ argument was to elect wiser cooler heads to vote for the proper will of the people (see Burr v. Jefferson) not to act as a pass through to give smaller...

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

Maybe in two more election cycles I'll be full fyodor. I believe history has shown that almost anything could happen in a couple of election cycles!! Actually I was going to say something of the sort when DAR said Texas could actually turn Blue in two or three election cycles. I was on the ve...

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

We have a senate. On purpose. To mediate majority rule by way of granting power to smaller population states. It isn't obviously wrong in my view to have a voting system that is "kinda like the senate". It isn't obviously better in any way to have straight majority rule. It's a preference, also arb...

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

Majority rule is mediated in a bagillion ways. It’s one element among many. If it’s the Ur value of a system, better start unwinding a lot of shit. You're being vague here, and the obscurity benefits your position. See, presumably, the other, um, bagillion ways are for good reasons. Such as the Bil...

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

I don't think there would be much difference in result between a PV vs. an EC. You can't use past elections as any guide since the contests were for EC and not single votes. So looking at past vote totals isn't going to necessarily be indicative of anything. There might be a brief shake up the firs...

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

I don’t recognize the principle as particularly noteworthy. Popular vote is just one flavor of voting. Being on the shit side of a narrow popular vote is just as shitty as being on the shit side of a narrow EC outcome. The narrowness makes the resentment but we pretend it’s the counting method. Go ...

People who think they will win more want the change. People on the other side who think they are right hate the change. There is no principle here. It’s an arbitrary aggregation rule.
I know that's what motivates them.

Does that make it impossible for principle to sway us?

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

The defenses of the EC that are being thrown out are pretty weak sauce. “Politicians will only campaign in NY and California” is the stupidest argument against it. You would think a bunch of people who live in NY would recognize that people who run for governor of NY campaign in more places than NY...

Re: When journalism goes bad

No shocker, the NYT editorial board doesn't understand risk and how it's not all black n white: Mr. Elwell has insisted that the F.A.A. made its decisions solely on the basis of safety. But if safety was the only consideration, then any risk would have warranted action. True. Though this FAA action...

Virtually all of my friends who are on Facebook are leftists. I also get a bit of Christian right-wing bullshit through David's family members, but they aren't the ones posting "VOTE OR ELSE" crap. Re: Vote or Die

I find the moral furor over voting curious in one particular way. For a partisan, I would think that voting for the other team would be worse than not voting at all. Y'know, logically speaking. It's occurred to me that one reason this logic may not deter the YOU MUST VOTE folks is that most people o...

Just pathetic excuse-making for Trump this morning. Even though he says he agrees that the Russians did try to meddle! But they were just revealing “uncomfortable truths” about Hillary, so they’re really the heroes of this story, and we meddle in elections all the time so it’s not really a big deal...

Re: Orange is the new President

If all the base wanted was tax cuts and judges who will overturn Roe, Pence could do it. But fundamentally, I think they want the President to be that guy at the bar who says "Man, if I were President, I'd tell them!" Agree, and you put it well. But I think you're also missing the sense of disgrace...
