Re: Petty annoyances

Selling stuff online, as I've probably said before.

"I am selling a ______ for $350. Reasonable offers considered. No trades, please."
"I only have $200 and an old motorcycle fender"

Re: The son of "What the hell are YOU staring at?"

I did say it was a 1980s sword and sandal movie. :-) And yes, that means it features completely gratuitous Sandahl Bergman boobs too. If it wasn't clear I was being quite serious. It sounds glorious. BTW where did you find it? It was actually shown at the local Alamo Drafthouse - they have a "Weird...

My wife accidentally deleted an important text message conversation from her phone. She called me in a panic asking me to help. I'm a pretty smart tech guy, but this is a little out of my usual sphere. BUT I FIGURED OUT HOW TO RECOVER THEM! I AM THE HERO OF THE HOUR!

Re: The son of "What the hell are YOU staring at?"

Last night I saw the 1984 version of She , and let me tell you if you are into bad movies this one is a jewel. It's like a mashup of Beyond Thunderdome and Red Sonja on acid (in fact, it stars Sandahl Bergman of RS). It's extremely loosely based on H. Rider Haggard's "She", re-imagined as a post-apo...

Background: Max usually sleeps at my wife's feet. Fury sometimes sleeps in our bed, usually on my side if she does, but more often she roams around at night and sleeps in the living room or office. The other evening, Fury had been unusually cuddly, and when we went to bed, she jumped up and curled u...

Re: Our Friends, The House of Saud

I only learned about this the other day: Back in 1977, Princess Mishaal was a member of the Saudi royal family, and she fell in love with a guy her family didn't approve of. Exact details are still unclear and probably always will be, but she was accused of adultery and was executed by a gunshot to ...

Re: Counter-factual: Spanish Civil War

I'm not an expert on the Spanish Civil War, but I pretty much agree with what's been said here. Firstly, the Nationalists were just way more organized than the Republicans, who were riven by internal divisions, so it might have taken some pretty substantial assistance. Also, large parts of the Repub...

Re: What's New at the Bijou?

I really liked The Favourite too. The acting, directing, costuming, and photography were all really strong. Minor annoyance: there were a few anachronistic clangers (for example, someone says "OK"). I'm not expecting complete historical accuracy, but things like that suddenly take you out of the mov...

Between losing an SAK and a multitool to TSA (on separate occasions, both because I forgot they were in my backpack I use as a carryon) and the addition of a cellphone taking limited pocket space, I haven't regularly carried a knife in the past 10-15 years, but before that I often did. The idea tha...

The Thing is frickin' awesome, and, among other things, a reminder of how cool practical effects and matte paintings were at their height. It's a gross out movie and therefore, special effects not withstanding, unawesome. Oh Warren, how wrong you are. It's a gross-out movie only in the sense that i...

Re: Petty annoyances

Craigslist reorganized their site a while back and changed all their URLs to be slightly different. For example, newyork.craigslist.org/msa became newyork.craigslist.org/search/msa. This is not a huge deal, but why the hell couldn't they have set up redirects so old links and typing habits kept work...

Re: Guns and Whatnot.

It makes me wonder if the switchblade ban could be overturned. Technically, the same argument should apply - they're "arms", and you can't outright ban them just because you don't like them - but they don't have the same historical and sporting appeal.

Some small businesses will encourage cash as part of their small business charm, but an actual discount is rare in my experience. For values of "small business charm" equalling "pocketing the cash and not reporting it for sales tax", in my experience! And $3?! Around here most places don't like to ...
