Re: Oh, Canada

Canada is a fan of pot, but not so much of the free market. Brenda Tobin and her son Trevor plan to open their pot shop in Labrador City in Newfoundland and Labrador at 4:20 p.m. Wednesday... She doesn't expect to make much money off the pot itself, noting Newfoundland's 8 percent cap on retail pot...

This is exactly why I approved that guy with three bankruptcies for a small business loan. Who knows more about failure than a guy who's done it? Not sure if joking or not, but apparently this is not that different from how some venture capitalists think. If you started a company and it crashed and...

The US Embassy in Canberra, Australia, sent out an invitation to a "cat pyjama-jam", featuring a photo of a tabby cat wearing a blue Cookie Monster outfit. The mission was forced to disappoint everyone, saying it had been a test of an email newsletter platform that wasn't actually supposed to go li...

William K. Coors has passed away at the age of 102, after being chairman of Molson Coors Brewing from 1959 to 2000 and then vice chairman until 2002. I assume that he will be buried like a Coors: close to water.

Re: The son of "What the hell are YOU staring at?"

I finally got around to watching Interstellar last night. Man, that movie was a mess. I wanted to like it - an SF movie that's not about ray guns and killer aliens? - but the storytelling was a trainwreck. There's a global crop blight and a little girl visited by "ghosts" and a top-secret NASA progr...

We use the heck out of live cable TV, so I'm nowhere near ready to get rid of it. But I've always found Verizon (for FIOS) to have better customer service than any other telecom company I've dealt with. And we just go with the 2-year contracts. For at least the last five years or so, Verizon has be...

Re: Speaking in tongues (the "learning languages" thread)

At a store the other day, I approached the counter, and realized the two men behind it were speaking Korean. I only caught a tiny fragment, but I was pleased I was able to understand anything at all. The man who was talking was holding a thing like a leather punch, and he ended a sentence with "...까...

Sorry to hear about Tony, Eric. If he's feeling a bit better on antibiotics, hopefully that's a good sign that it's fixable. On our side, we eventually made the decision not to keep Lola. The cats were getting more confident in a bad way - more assertive and aggressive - and Lola was starting to get...

I made the mistake of reading the comments. (short version: capitalism is evil, school choice is evil, Christians are somehow to blame for this) Admittedly some of them were funny, like "Now I'm dying to google 'Roman sex with a goose'... but should probably wait until I'm home from work."

Besides, if we'd really wanted to fuck with Russia, I think there was a lot more we could have done. As it was, the USSR basically got to re-establish Imperial Russia. Operation Unthinkable was probably never going to happen just because I don't think the civilians of the Western powers would have s...
