Re: OFFS: The Forsakening

Here's a completely incoherent bit of nonsense that was published in the Opinion section of the NY Times. The author starts by positing that we're going to have a post-scarcity economy in the future, then says that the only reason we have scarcity is capitalism, then says that the obvious way forwar...

This seemed relevant: https://www.businessinsider.com/google-youtube-san-francisco-pride-ban-2019-6 tl;dr Some people want to ban Google from San Francisco's Pride Parade because YouTube didn't come down hard enough on a commentator who made racist and homophobic slurs against a journalist. This is ...

Re: Intellectualism: Dark and Webbed

Here is something similar , but how people actually die vs. how deaths are reported. That is an interesting discussion. I think it's wrongheaded because by the same logic, if you were to judge what people did by what was in the news, you would think the world was filled with senior management and n...

One of my Amazon orders has not arrived because the USPS is claiming that they could not access our building, period. This strikes me as highly unlikely. That will randomly happen to some of my Amazon orders with USPS or UPS, and it makes no sense, because I get something from Amazon about twice a ...

Re: What's New at the Bijou?

Saw John Wick 3: Parabellum today. It's OK. The directing is good, the acting is as good as you can expect, the fight choreography is good. The writing is about what you would expect for a John Wick film, and it's actually not bad when we get some real plot in the movie. The editing...I would like t...

The diversity kool-aid is amazing. You can claim that any and all great things will happen if you just take what you are doing and add diversity. Because women and minorities are so different from white and Asian men that they will completely modify the entire incentive structure rather than compet...

I was once asked what my GPA was at a job interview. But I think it was just the once. I had the same experience. And the interviewer seemed horrified and disbelieving that I didn't know it offhand, and in the post-interview conversation, the recruiter basically asked me if I were hiding something....

My beef with the Dark Forest theory is that it presumes that advanced aliens have stuck to radio technology. We've likely only been able to detect and distinguish alien radio waves for less than 4 decades. Which means we could only detect aliens 40 light years away and that also assumes they haven'...

On a related note, if you are a big international company, you should probably know better than to have two products whose names differ only by one letter, an R or an L. Yes, it's a stereotype, but it's also true.

When you order something from a company about 15 miles from where you live and it takes a tour of the whole region before it gets to you. I live in Brooklyn. Under the new law Alabama passed, a rape victim who gets an abortion, or the doctor who performs it, will face a MUCH longer prison sentence than the actual rapist. And, along similar lines, it seems like you get a longer prison term for performing an abortion than you would if you'd actually waite...

I am amused by "Crowd City" on my phone. It feels like a beta version/mechanism for getting you to watch ads* but it's still fun.
