Re: You Learn Something New Every Day

Everybody knows about the Y2K bug, and some geeks know about the Y2038 issue or the GPS Week Rollover issue, but a lesser-known timekeeping bug crops up when the Japanese imperial era changes : The Japanese calendar has Japanese era names that changes with the reign of the Japanese emperor. Since mo...

Re: Brexit: what say ye?

I'm a big proponent of a hybrid system where just the House is elected via parliamentary rules. That way no more gerrymandering and you would give smaller parties a possible voice in federal government. I wouldn't mind seeing something like that, maybe where one house was elected district-by-distri...

Re: Brexit: what say ye?

I agree that this is not about parliamentary vs presidential systems. We didn't always have 2+ years of presidential campaigning, and there are other presidential systems that manage to do without that. It's a political culture thing that has changed before and I hope it changes again. I also think...

Oh shit, I just realized another design inspiration for the Cybertruck: the "Landmaster" from the (execrable) 1977 film Damnation Alley.

Perhaps we ought to come up with a Grylliade Escape Plan, in case we ever need to abandon this platform.

Re: Brexit: what say ye?

(I know this is in the "Opinions" section but) When a piece begins "voters are fully politically literate" and then he goes on to say "Wild West, free-market system" in the next paragraph, I know I'm reading a very slanted piece. Honestly, almost everything he describes sounds undemocratic and desig...

Re: Money for Nothing: the Universal Basic Income

Like Jennifer, I am definitely seeing more than I remember in the past of overt "let's outlaw being rich and take all the rich people's money", and remember that I live in NYC, which has always had a significant hard-left population. I've seen comments in the past, from across the political spectrum...

Researchers test children's ability to communicate concepts without speech, using improvised sign language, and discover that purely symbolic communication and grammar both occur very naturally even to small children. https://arstechnica.com/science/2019/12/kids-playing-charades-develop-core-feature...

Re: Does Elon's Musk stink?

Elon Musk drove the Cybertruck to dinner at Nobu. And managed to knock over a sign and make an illegal left turn on his way out of the parking lot. Also, there is some question of whether this was a legitimate use of the Cybertruck - manufacturers are apparently allowed to use not-yet-approved vehic...

Re: Music for the Masses

I was on Spotify for six months and gave up on it because I fed it my entire music library and it never recommended a good song, and it lacks any means to communicate that you like this song or don't like that one. They may have changed the interface since you were on it, but it certainly has those...

Youtube's algorithm is completely shit now. Absolute dog shit. It just suggests other commercially viable stuff you've listened to. It used to be good. Do you use Pandora? Their algorithm is pretty good. Spotify, too - I've found a lot of good stuff through their "Discover Weekly" personalized play...

I will place the divider behind me simply because I don't want that grubby prole's items near mine clarity is a virtue, and it's just easier if I don't have to stop the cashier from grabbing an item that they assumed was one of mine.

I think I saw a grocery divider in the new Wonder Woman trailer. Man that took me back. What do you do, just stand there until the person before you is fully checked out? Tried watching the first episode of Reprisal . The best way I can describe it is that it's like someone said, "Hey, what if Robert Rodriguez directed a mashup of Sons of Anarchy and Mad Men ?" but didn't really have any idea how to write it very well. It looks good and it's mildly entertaining, but ...

What is so offensive about the Peloton bike ad? It's an ad about attractive, comfortable people buying an expensive piece of exercise equipment. Is this something new? (moving this stuff to here) The long trend, completely toxic in my view, is to try to sweep more and more things under insurance so people don't have to have any savings. To be fair, though: given the ridiculous (and often arbitrary) sums of money people get charged for healthcare, "savings" is usel...
