Re: You Learn Something New Every Day

Winning the contest for most-obviously-not-gonna-be-successful-til-you-change-that-name-sweepstakes, Tavares was, for their first decade or so, named "Chubby and The Turnpikes".

Re: Good Cover Versions

You’re getting into some definitional issues here. The band Indigo Girls is 2 women. Do they use additional musicians on stage and during recording? Are some of them male? Yes, but the band itself is Emily & Amy. How meaningful is it to say you’re an all female band when there’s a rotating cast of ...

Re: Good Cover Versions

I'd be curious if there was a greater representation of females in things like symphonies and such. I know of many women who grew up taking lessons on various classical instruments like piano, ciello, violin, and so on. I know very few who took guitar or drum lessons. It's been a couple of three de...

Re: Random Observations C.A (306 pages is enough)

One finding is almost no cool job or amount of money could save you from the trash heap if you were 5’5” or under. Like they had the plague. Yep. I've read several studies that all confirmed that. But height is about the only physical characteristic. That can make a man undateable. Women are mostly...

The Officer who dragged the passenger off the plane is suing United. Long's suit names United Airlines, the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) and its commissioner, Ginger Evans. "But for the CDA's negligence and failure to train (Long) how to respond to an escalating situation with an airline pa...

Re: Dreams (not those crushed by the weight of unfulfilled life)

I continue to be baffled and amused by what David thinks constitutes a weird dream. He has the most boring dreams ever. And he cannot get any perspective on that. The other morning, we both said to each other, "I had the weirdest dreams last night!" And his were: in one a rhinoceros walked up to ou...

Re: Dreams (not those crushed by the weight of unfulfilled life)

At the part I can start remembering, I have started dancing with a woman in a public place like some sort of bar/restaurant. Damnit, it's *my* dream, couldn't I be a slightly better dancer? I'm dancing embarrassingly bad, even worse than real life, which is saying something. Suddenly I realize the m...

Uhboh, the NYT is picking up the reports of dozens of Russians dead. The Kremlin says they were mercenaries and disavows involvement, but this is still bad. Dozens of Russians Are Believed Killed in U.S.-Led Syria Attack https://nyti.ms/2BrdrDv Yeah, one might not want to look at that too closely.....

I'd like to see more of this. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/14/opinion/sunday/the-warrior-at-the-mall.html Since, as recent history has shown us, violating the rules of patriotic correctness is a far worse sin in the eyes of the American public than sending soldiers to die uselessly, Can't be sai...

I'm sure I'm not the only one who, upon hearing that R. Lee Ermey had died, immediately heard, "LISTEN UP, MAGGOTS!"
My first thought was, "R. Lee Ermey died, now how will we ever know who's a maggot?"

Of course the answer is us, we all are a maggot. Who just needed some tough love.

And of course Milos Foreman's death is all over the news. I'll just say that The Firemen's Ball is worth checking out. I saw it a long time ago and don't remember enough to say anything intelligent about it but it might have flown under peoples' radar because he's done so many more famous movies.

I recently had one of those moments where someone I haven't thought of in years just randomly popped into my head and I thought, hmmm I wonder if that person is still alive and oh my, he had just died like the day before  He's not a household name but I grew up reading him and outdoorsy types...

Re: Have you accepted Nothing as your lord and savior?

The Catholic Church has historically believed that the Bible was difficult enough that asking/allowing lay people to read it directly was a recipe for them getting confused and lead astray. Thus they should instead listen to the readings in Church where the priest could explain to them how to think...

There's merit to this argument, but it also means McDonald's hamburgers are excellent. also Bud Light Well, I did say *necessary precondition*, and I'd say neither McD's burgers or bud light have a particularly high starting mean/average. Nor do I think the goal of excellence is worth the price of ...

I thought GEDs were for kids who were smart enough to figure out that high school was stupid. Obviously ivy leagues probably won't take you but I've always thought the smartest thing to do is drop out, get GED and go straight to college. That sounds good in theory. Is that what you did? I don't bel...
