Re: How's the weather? v. 1.1

It got up to 70 degrees here today. Couple days ago the cold was bad enough to burst water mains, and today I had all the doors and windows wide open and walked around in short sleeves.

Re: Simple Pleasures

Whoa, mama, I am on a ROLL. After mentally rearranging and reorganizing Sandy's entire bathroom last night (place be lookin' sharp now, at least in my mind), I for-reals went through my own clothes drawers for an extensive purge/culling, followed by a massive re-organization. I still had a lot of bi...

Re: Food

With Jeff gone to his sci-fi convention today I drove to a certain thrift store I particularly like except it's unfortunately over 20+ miles away, and made some pretty good scores. Then, since I was out that far anyway, I drove the additional few miles to "The Halal Guys" in Chamblee (the only HG st...

Re: Food

Chicken section was gutted; all they had left for chicken parts were some giant-size family packs, and a couple of very expensive organic fair-trade free-range eco-friendly dolphin-safe etc. etc. options. Why you no get the giant family pack and freeze what you don't cook tonight? Pick up a box of ...

Re: Food

(Sigh) Jeff's off at a science fiction convention for a couple nights, and since I have the place to myself I figured I'd make some chicken. (Jeff likes chicken mainly as an ingredient, whereas I like biting into a properly seasoned drumstick or thigh.) We don't have any chicken but I figured it wou...

Re: Simple Pleasures

Turns out Dollar Tree has little two-drawer chests, and colored transparent plastic shoeboxes-with-covers, for only a buck apiece. So I bought a couple more items, and now I'm off to play with my latest organizing toys.

Re: Simple Pleasures

Actually, Sandy, before I go suggesting you buy storage equipment I should ask: what is your bathroom {s} inherent setup in terms of built-in counterspace, drawer space, shelf/alcove/closet space, etc.? The situation I'm in now -- where even my smaller bathroom at least has a large sinkside counter...

Re: Simple Pleasures

I definitely have a problem with one of us not putting stuff back, but then again...there's no place for stuff. I'm trying to gently purge...we're at one item/day as a goal right now. I'll measure and see if I can't get a drawer or open organizer so stuff can be pulled out and tossed back in. With ...

Re: Simple Pleasures

Sterilite really is good, and pretty low cost but it lasts well for what you pay. (Not that I use it for any super-heavy-duty stuff). Sandy, if your bathroom really is a mess -- specifically in that there's a bunch of stuff that really needs to be there. but nothing's really organized or convenient ...

Re: Petty annoyances

Forgot to mention: given the location of my apartment complex compared to the road with the open fire hydrants (which by the way were all closed not long after, when Jeff and I drove there together on our way out to eat), I don't think the hydrants were connected to "my" water loss. Apparently aroun...

Re: Petty annoyances

I just got back from another trip to the Walmart Market (which I learned to my dismay is closing; they were already sold out of water and other immediate necessities, plus produce and perishables, but on the bright side I did pick up a few things I was to have purchased next week anyway, with everyt...

there are three or four hydrants along a mile or two stretch, and every hydrant is shooting water out of every hole, badly flooding that road.
WHY???
Dunno. I'm going to guess it has something do do with my current lack of water, but cannot be certain.

Re: Petty annoyances

I just got back from Walmart, where I bought some gallon jugs of water for flushing. On the way there I drove down this one road that I'm amazed was still open to the public -- there are three or four hydrants along a mile or two stretch, and every hydrant is shooting water out of every hole, badly ...

Re: Petty annoyances

Reminder: the disaster that left my neighborhood bone-dry wasn't a hurricane or tropical storm, no earthquake or tsunami or mega-drought or asteroid strike or nuclear attack -- it was ONE INCH OF SNOW.

Freakin' Atlanta, man.

Re: Petty annoyances

Ugh. Still no water and it's not just me -- definitely a main break, and no estimate for when repairs will be done. I still have bottled water to drink and poured more to make coffee, and if I MUST go without showering right this second it's not too bad (it's not like this is the hot-sweaty season, ...

Re: Petty annoyances

News reports that water mains in general have been breaking around the area, though I don't see any specific mention of my neighborhood. Still no water. I did already have almost a gallon chilling in the fridge anyway as a matter of course (after this, it'll be more); I also have bottled water shoul...

Re: Petty annoyances

Uh-oh--none of the faucets work. It's well below freezing outside, though inside the apartment with the heat off it was 69. (I just-now turned on the heat, which was still set at 73 at Jeff suffered some mild fever-induced chills a few days ago.) I don't think the pipes could be frozen, since in add...

The model as I understand it goes something like: - The world is composed of scumbags and good people - Scumbags don't respect authority or participate in social institutions that would moderate their native scumbaggishness. - Scumbags/lawbreakers will do literally anything, they are functionally p...

Around 11 this morning -- shortly after confirming that the doctor's office is indeed closed -- Jeff watched one of the news channels and discovered that even if we wanted...

Re: When journalism goes bad

It feels like the racist veneer description is a bit too simple. By analogy the left just wants free stuff paid for by people they don’t like and left elites want the power to decide who gets what. There is some truth there but I’m not going to say that’s all there is. I think conservatives worried...

A few episodes into Marvel's Runaways. This show is extremely not good. That's too bad. The premise is mildly interesting, though I've heard very meh things about the comic. My wife was watching the first or second episode of this and I, not knowing what it was, cracked, " What is this, some other ...
