Re: Petty annoyances

JD, do you ever read the "Choosing Beggars" subreddit? LOTS of people like that in there.

Re: How's the weather? v. 1.1

When I had to shovel -- especially the three-foot Loudoun snowfall I dealt with myself because Jeff was in South Carolina at the time -- since I don't have a hell of a lot of upper-body strength I only made use of about a quarter of my snow shovel's capacity each time: instead of digging the entire ...

Re: How's the weather? v. 1.1

Man, reading these winter-weather complaints REALLY has me feeling left out, since I moved to Atlanta. When people are talking about snowfalls measured in feet, somehow "The frost on my car was almost thick enough to be opaque this morning" loses what little frisson it had.

Re: Calling 2024 for AOC

I don't really see what the problem is. She can't afford two residences before the first paycheck arrives but has a good network so she's fine. The problem is that, when a reporter asked her why she didn't immediately move to DC after winning the election, she mentioned the expense as a reason, and...

Re: Calling 2024 for AOC

I don't think empathy on that scale is a thing, jen. The sneers I've seen basically boil down to "She should be able to handle this with no difficulty," though whether the critics think every 29-year-old should be able to pull this off, or only the ones who successfully ran for Congress, will somet...

Re: Calling 2024 for AOC

Again, the pretense that her situation is similar to the general public's doesn't hold up. Again, she never represented it as being similar to a situation faced by the general public. No, people in this thread arguing with me did. I definitely view it as a situation where "the general public" is mo...

Re: Calling 2024 for AOC

I'd be curious to know how many of those poverty-level DC residents have section 8 vouchers or subsidized housing, live with relatives, or avail themselves of other cheap-housing options AOC did not have.

The Sandy thing, shouted as if it's revealing some dark secret, is maybe even more mystifying than the dancing thing. IMO, even the sneers about her being unable to afford a DC apartment in addition to the NYC apartment she already has are downright baffling. How out-of-touch with normal (as oppose...

Being libertarian means always assuming that only wild-n-crazy liberals think a Republican president ought to be held to actual, like, standards.

Re: Libertarian Diskanen

On some level, I suppose, we'll have to accept that healthcare in general is going to run at an overall loss; I'm snipping out this part because I think this is an assumption I often see being made by people and think it's kind of odd. It IS a loss (except for the maternity and elective surgery exe...

The fact that Republicans are so unreasonably, batshit insane about her makes me like her a bit in spite of myself. Among various bombshell revelations I've learned about her recently: there exists video of her dancing in college. (Wholesome dancing, not what I did to pay the bills.) She went by the...

Of course it's a stupid argument which among other things confuses cause and effect. This i...

On some level, I suppose, we'll have to accept that healthcare in general is going to run at an overall loss; it's just a matter of deciding how much loss is going to be acceptable (specifically, how much of a loss the collective "we" are willing to take on behalf of other people). Even on an indivi...

If I was in a household where that represented 100% of my pretax income, and my credit was decent, who the fuck would approve that financing? [ Googles cost of M4 convertible ] Yikes. Re: Food

Bought "bread pakora" (sp?) from an Indian supermarket's hot-food table. It's basically a spicy potato samosa, only with samosas, the filling is wrapped in a dumpling and deep-fried, whereas for bread pakora, the filling is put into a sandwich, which is then deep-fried. Spicy enough to make my nose ...

Think of it more as being in the Friend Zone with the status quo. Once you show them how reasonable and level-headed you are by going along with whatever they do, they're bound to start respecting your views. Are you actually willing to burn it all down? If not, you're right in there too. If so ......

Re: Orange is the new President

I submit that few people would watch a show about this administration if it were fictional. If it were fictional, I think most people's main complaint would be that it's too unrealistic, even for a satire. How many absolutely-true statements about POTUS Trump thus far would've been dismissed as stu...

Re: Orange is the new President

The whole TV show meme about this presidency seems wrong to me, in retrospect. This administration is damn weird, but too ugly and malevolent to make a watchable comedy, I dunno -- you ever read Catch-22? Far darker and more malevolent than I remotely expected, the first time I ever read it.... It ...
