The writing for TOS was pretty bad. There'd been 20 years of narrative development in television between the end of TOS and the start of TNG.
Which makes it mysterious why the firs couple of seasons of TNG were so dire, writing-wise.
Because Roddenberry.

So being caught on video beating your wife or girlfriend is fine, but peacefully and silently protesting police brutality is beyond the pale. Nice to know where the NFL's priorities lie.

To be fair, he can still mute people on Twitter -- he's not obligated to see or read what you post, nor should he be IMO -- but he can't block you so that you can't read his. (I know, as a practical matter, seeing tweets from someone who blocked you is a trivially easy matter--but I still think it w...

Re: Random Observations C.A (306 pages is enough)

Now I kinda wanna go out and dye my hair black again, except I know better than to think I can pull off that look at my age. Also, given that I now live in Georgia there's only about three days per year when I could wear my black-velvet black-silk black-denim black-on-black all-is-blackness Goth cl...

Re: Star Trek Wankery

There are exceptions in both cases, but: for the most part, when watching TV episodes I prefer TNG to TOS, but when reading novels ( original novels, not novelizations of movies or TV episodes), the TOS offerings are far better than TNG (except for a couple of Peter David works). I have not been abl...

Re: Random Observations C.A (306 pages is enough)

I thought you might come through, Jennifer. :) Thanks. The lyrics in "Our Solemn Hour" hit pretty much every Goth trope except taking advantage of the English-language "life/strife" rhyme. Gratuitous Latin? Check. A spoken-words-in-the-background part where you can't quite make out what they're say...

Re: Home $weet Home

This is part of the death spiral of no savings. People will spend astronomical money on a forever basis so they don't have a one time event in the $1k zone. See also extended auto warranties. Low deductible high premium insurance. Anything so you don't have to have savings. That attitude is the onl...

Re: I just don't get it

What always struck me was that Americans will typically go gaga over the royal Brits, but you never hear a peep about royal Scandinavians. My guess is that it's a combination of the language barrier and the fact that modern American culture is a "direct descendant" of Britain -- even nth-generation...

Re: Random Observations C.A (306 pages is enough)

Jeff and I were trying to leave the gas station near us today (we have to make a left turn to get home, and were waiting for traffic to clear out enough to let us do so), and then, coming from our left, was a truck belching VERY thick clouds of brownish-black smoke. There was a cop car two vehicles ...

Re: Random Observations C.A (306 pages is enough)

There's an old cartoon trope where a cat is yowling on a fence, and an exasperated human living nearby opens a window and throws a shoe at it. In other news, it sounds like the feral cat colony in my apartment complex is having a loud, yowling orgy right now. I have no shoes I don't want, plus I wou...

Our Solemn Hour from Within Temptation is only 11 years old. By Goth standards, that's practically new music.

It's World Goth Day. Do any of us have gothic music recommendations less than 15 years old? "Dirt from a Holy Place" by OSI is ... [ checks release date ] .... only three months older than 15 years! And a really good song, if you skip through the slooooooow introductory part. The dark-n-sexy cool p...

Re: Orange is the new President

Somewhere in America, a sadistic little girl who daydreams about becoming a professional torturer when she grows up is feeling VERY inspired today.

She can practice for her future profession by beating the soles of her babydolls' feet.

Gina Haspel got the job.

America is officially the type of country that tortures people, does not hold the torturers accountable, but DOES reward them with prestigious government jobs.

Dammit.

Mystery solved! One of my Facebook friends informed me that many "American Girl" dolls have tea parties in their storybooks -- and apparently there are tea parties held in actual American Girl doll-stores too (source: she took her niece to one).

Re: Random Observations C.A (306 pages is enough)

I refilled a prescription for megadose vitamin D, and at my local CVS, the pharmacy pickup line goes through the aisle where one side sells very cheap, impulse-purchase toys, including miniature tea sets featuring a tiny teapot, sugar bowl, and cups and saucers. And it occurred to me: most non-game,...

Re: I just don't get it

The story of Aaron Schlossberg (racist lawyer who lost his shit and threatened to call ICE on people he heard speaking Spanish) is another one of those boggle-my-mind issues. (Especially since the website of his soon-to-be-defunct law firm boasts of speaking Spanish, among other languages.) If heari...

Maintenance guy came by yesterday, determined the coolant levels in the outside unit were fine, but checked inside the utility closet and discovered the filter was utterly filthy--f...
