Re: Random Observations C.A (306 pages is enough)

Related to this from a couple months back: The other day I did a minor culling of clothes, discarding a few pieces with small but unfixable (by my standards) flaws such as "The front of this garment has a grease spot the size of a dime" or "there's a tiny hole in one part of the fabric." So I won't ...

Re: the entirely civil and thoughtful israel thread

I'm going to equivocate on the 'money' part: It has often been used as a proxy for "The Jews" in bigot-speak. In 1995, after the Parti Quebequois lost the referendum on Quebec separation, Jacques Parizeau, the PQ leader and then Prime Minister of Quebec, blamed the loss on "Money and the Ethnic" vo...

Re: the entirely civil and thoughtful israel thread

So instead of "It's all about the benjamins" (or even a straightforward "It's about money"), it would be preferable to say "Well, SOME of it is about the money as with all powerful lobbying groups, but Israel also gets a strong contingent of support from fundamentalist Rapture-Christians who suppor...

Re: Twitter!

Which made me kind of wince because, well before Weigel decided to make a logo out of his disembodied head-hair, that wretch of a Roosh did it first. [ Wince ] [ Wince ] [ Full-body wince. I wonder if maybe this counts as 'exercise'? ] I don't think either were the first to do that, if it helps. No...

Re: You Learn Something New Every Day

Found via metafilter : a new paper suggests that it was our distant pre-human ancestors' taste for fat (rather than meat) that set the stage for the later evolution of our big brains and intelligence. Long before human ancestors began hunting large mammals for meat, a fatty diet provided them with t...

Re: Twitter!

I seem to recall Dave Weigel having a fairly good-looking face (in a "cute and non-threatening so that pre-pubsecent girls are likely to have a crush on him" kind of way). Why the HELL does he insist on that 70s-porn-star hairstyle and mustache? His profile pic on twitter is his disembodied hair an...

Re: The book will be better

I would like it if HBO or Netflix or some other "premium" TV did a miniseries out of Harry Turtledove's Confederate Victory and Worldwar series (at least the first part of the latter). No idea who should play what character, though; I completely lack the casting director's ability to look at an acto...

Re: the entirely civil and thoughtful israel thread

Except that "money" (from AIPAC) most likely IS the answer to Greenwald's tweeted (implied) question Which is where presentation comes in. Jews manipulating everything with their money is an old anti-semitic trope. As Thoreau asked already, how can one criticize AIPAC without being accused of this?...

Re: the entirely civil and thoughtful israel thread

Criticizing "money in politics" and "lobbyists' money in politics" is bog-standard on both sides of the American political aisle, and doesn't suddenly become anti-Semitic just because the lobbyist money in question comes from Israel. EDIT: I just-now saw this post from you: "It helps to clearly pre...

Re: the entirely civil and thoughtful israel thread

Semi-related anecdote: "benjamins" is such common slang, Harry Turtledove uses it in his Crosstime Traffic series (his books written for high-schoolers, more "educational" and less R-rated than his standard alt-histories) ; it's set about 100 years in the future and, among other societal changes, in...

Re: the entirely civil and thoughtful israel thread

And yes, anyone who tries to call out israel gets accused of anti-semitism. Since when has that excused anti-semitism in the course of calling out Israel, so as to make it easier? Do you really support the old dipshit conservative, "If they call me racist no matter what, I'm just gonna be racist, t...

Re: the entirely civil and thoughtful israel thread

I don't see what's anti-Semitic about "It's all about the benjamins, baby" (specifically in response to Greenwald's tweet) -- that's such a well-known hip-hop slang term for $100 bills (or large sums of money in general) that even *my* white self has known about it for years. Perhaps find someone a...

Re: Gentry from the block

Ever since 2016, I'm finding it easier and easier to withhold my sympathy from people whose only reaction to change is not to try to survive it (much less benefit from it), On the other hand, I'm rather skeptical of the notion that it's reasonable to expect these low-income people have the know-how...

Re: Gentry from the block

That's like being concerned over the tide rolling in. If you can't afford to get the hell out of the way, the tide can drown you. Just so everyone here knows, it's not an all or nothing choice: you can support the building of additional housing units (at whatever price range) and still think "Yeah,...

Again, I have no problem with an old school (or warehouse, or vacant lot) being converted into apartments, even expensive ones. But I do sympathize with the poor neighbors who are very concerned because they KNOW the end result will be them being priced out of their current homes.

The landmarked building currently has rentals available for $1,655 to 3,955 a month, a price point that reflects just how much the neighborhood has changed. Yeah, speaking as someone who believes "The rent [and cost of housing in general] really is too damned high" -- I definitely sympathize with p...
