Re: Ladyfashun

Serious question (although I feel a bit silly for asking it): was there or is there some change in style for women's shirt-sleeve cuffs, specifically that cuffs are supposed to be bigger now? Why I ask: I'm wearing a new-to-me shirt right now (as with most thrift-store clothing purchases, I have no ...

Re: When journalism goes bad

The first time I said this I meant it as a joke, but now I'm kinda thinking it might be for real: Trump seems to think the game of Monopoly describes how economics actually works -- "mutually beneficial trade" and "prosperous, peaceful economic co-existence" are not possible, because the only way yo...

Re: Tiny Triumphs

Not a triumph OR a failure, but since I was already talking abut my definitely stunted sense of smell, and presumably stunted sense of taste: a few months ago Jeff discovered the joys of making mojitos, after discovering many of the Asian supermarkets we frequent sell sugarcane juice in their freeze...

Re: Inequality

Don’t know that I have a solution, but it certainly isn’t putting non academically inclined people into 4 year programs. It would look more like trying to get those people trained into skills with market demand. Lots of medical stuff. Relocation is also a part of that story. And the high costs/debt...

Re: Inequality

I’m not an avotoast determinist. I’m mostly a guy who thinks the bulk of the structural issue is related to non degree holders Which seems to suggest that the solution is for non-degree-holders to change that status and get a degree? Presumably while ignoring or dismissing any suggestion that "high...

This is a review of the Chase and Sanborn coffee can, not the coffee itself: of all the metal coffee cans I've converted into emergency space heaters, this can is probably the best because, while it has pretty much the same width as any standard-sized coffee can, it is several inches shorter from t...

Re: The author is dead, but is the performer?

Copying what I said about this once before: Even though the song Baby It's Cold Outside is older than my parents, I was not aware of it until a couple years ago, when I first read an article on the theme "This song is terrible and promotes rape." But ... I listened to the song, and read the lyrics, ...

Re: Inequality

Tl;dr: while some examples of "I have a degree or two yet still can't find a job to support myself" are due entirely to poor decision-making, plenty more are not, and there's enough of them that I do indeed think there's an overall systemic problem: it's not purely a case of too many individuals ma...

"Meritocratic?" "Diverse?" Well, at least the "secular" part applies to Donald Trump.

You know, I never bothered checking my TV's setting sin the first place, and until reading Painboy's post I had no idea there was any such thing as a motion smoothing feature, but now that I know I kinda wanna check it out, and only my inherent laziness is keeping me from doing so.

And it may be my headache talking, but every damn time I hear someone talk about how people with a master's degree can't find decently-paying jobs, I lose more sympathy for those very people. If you've pursued six years of post-secondary school and haven't put effort into planning how to get a dece...

Re: Tiny Triumphs

I'm just wondering if maybe it's my use of sugar (or Jeff's disinterest in doing so), rather than my presumed taste-bud weakness, to explain why Jeff disliked two out of five coffees we've tried that I found ordinary or even better than average. Two more anecdotes I remember: on occasion, where ther...

Re: Tiny Triumphs

I may have to look up some C&B and see how it tastes to me. Mind, this gets me reflecting how smell and taste are senses where it's hard for people without any obvious impairment to calibrate against other people. There's no such thing as 20/20 smelling, as a general thing. (Sommeliers, perfumers, ...

For our regular daily pick-me-up cup of coffee (as opposed to "coffee we serve to guests" or other special-occasion coffee events), Jeff and I usually buy cans of store-brand coffee, either from Target or Kroger. A couple weeks ago, we were browsing an overstock outlet where they happened to sell ca...

I just realized something: Nicole's "How to wear a D-ring belt" looks pretty simple, so if ever I get such a belt I now know what to do with it -- but the last part of the instructions says to tuck any excess belt material into the nearest belt-loop of your pants, to avoid the fabric hanging down an...

Two of the long-sleeved linen shirts I've bought for extreme-hot-n-humid conditions have buttons above the elbows on their sleeves. Cops came by yesterday to inspect the contents of the garbage dumpster next to my building -- more precisely, to investigate the two ATMs that somehow ended up there.
