Re: The Right Way to View Competing Political Horrors

Come to think of it, perhaps there's a clue here regarding the thread topic -- "the right way to view competing political horrors" -- ANY political position involves looking at certain people or groups of people and saying "They're part of the problem in need of fixing." (Among those of us who skew...

Of course, even if you take the analogy on its face -- okay, there were a bunch of raccoons in my basement and Trump said he'd get rid of them -- yeah, he SAID he would, but a couple years later the raccoons are still there, and also he brought in some rabid Nazi weasels and Russian plague rats and ...

It's especially weird when you consider that "medicine" is basically "the engineering part of human biology."

In all seriousness, I still don't understand how "multiple bankruptcies, including one where he lost money running a fucking casino " translates to "very successful." "he has built a lot of things" He sure has. Stroll down the scenic boardwalk of Atlantic City and you can still see many buildings wi...

Re: I just don't get it

Even though I haven't played video games in ages (IIRC the last home system I personally owned was the Sega Genesis, FFS), I do get the appeal of watching videos of other people playing -- specifically, people who are enough better than you to reach levels you could never reach yourself. (Although w...

Re: The Abortion Thread

In Alabama, rape victims are not allowed to abort their rapists' progeny, but rapists ARE granted paternal rights. Despite everything, it is still somehow considered crass to suggest these abortion bans are motivated by "deep-seated issues with women" as opposed to, y'know, love of da babeez. https:...

At least she complained about "raccoons" rather than just plain "coons." Because the latter would be racist, and I'm sure she definitely wouldn't want to be THAT, lest those Ricardos and Hasids she complained about take offense.

Jesus Christ. IMO, despite his tenure, maybe he oughtta be fired for trying to get his students banished from the country. Reminds me of that bigoted teacher in Texas who got canned last week after sending tweets urging Trump to investigate her "illegal" immigrant students at her school. https://www...

This is just an intergenerational formulation of the free rider problem. Whether I benefit from somebody else having kids is irrelevant. I don't think "tax breaks for people with dependents" is a "free rider" issue, anymore than letting people deduct medical expenses from their taxes is. And I have...

We can have a whole conversation about the efficacy and ethics of child welfare policies, but the 'pro-family' policies supported by governments are targeted at and overwhelmingly benefit the middle and upper-middle class. They are not primarily promoted as a means of child welfare. Sure, but the i...

I'm more or less Cowenian on growth. It's the greatest engine of suffering mitigation ever to exist on the earth and by such a large magnitude, if you do something you know will cost a half percent of growth to mitigate some near term unrest, you own that suffering over the long term. You have beco...

You missed the Andy Ngo part: “Quillette writer Andy Ngo, who called attention to Lenihan’s work on Twitter and whose work Lenihan cites in his article, insisted that the legitimacy of Lenihan’s findings was self-evident from Lenihan’s Twitter posts. “ Ah yes, the self evident methodology that you ...

I dunno, does the practical sense involve things like the environment? Avoiding civil unrest? You call it an unwinding, I think of it as re-orientation. I think people are getting smarter about economic growth and realize that while the number has some important real-life correlations, it's *not* t...

Acthar is used for infantile spasms, which afflict roughly 2,000 babies in the U.S. each year, but Mallinckrodt has expanded the use of Acthar for other ailments like rheumatoid arthritis. A 60 Minutes report from May of 2018 raised serious questions about how well the drug actually works for arthr...

That said, if I were to attempt an appeal to adult reason, I'd ask which party lets its crazies sit at the main table. For decades the GOP has pandered to its extremes while the Blues have tried to marginalize them. That may be changing in the era of Bernie and AOC, but the jury is still out on tha...

For longer than I've been alive, the GOP has been the party of the Southern Strategy, then compounded that with the "Moral Majority," science denial and dog-whistle racism. Around the time Obama got elected, more and more of them started trading their dog whistles for megaphones.
