Hmm.

99 acres.

Live in the small house and turn the big house into a destination hunting resort for Scandinavians.

Re: Stand-Up Comedy as depicted on Amazon Prime

The whole Catskills thing seemed weird, but that's from me looking back on what was normal, I guess, back then? I mean, I understand that it used to be a thing. Hell, Dirty Dancing was set in such a place, and there's enough references to the "borscht belt" and 'upstate resort clubs' in pop culture ...

Re: Stand-Up Comedy as depicted on Amazon Prime

OTOH, the "To Kill A Mockingbird" opening was brilliant. Brilliant how? I see that it's a spot on recreation. But I can't make a connection between the hot summer of Maycomb Alabama and the mountain air of the Catskills. I didn't read any significance into it; it just caught me off guard as a anoth...

I suspect the pet store doesn’t have food grade activated charcoal. Of course you can get a tub of it on amazon for dirt cheap. No one in 'merica has "food grade" activated carbon/charcoal. It is not an approved food additive. What you'll find is pharma-grade activated charcoal for use in/as dietar...

Re: Food

I made a version of zurek, Polish sour rye soup, yesterday that came out pretty well. Began the zur, or zakwas, or sour, on Tuesday. Mmmmm.... fermenty rye smell..... In reviewing a bunch of recipes online to use as guidance, it looks like Poland (and perhaps other eastern-bloc nations) have an equi...

Re: Questions for the Grylliade Non-Hive Mind

Is there a reusable solution for ripening fruit like the paper bag but not made of paper? The closest I can find is the Avocado Sock , and I am not paying $18 + $7 shipping for a motherfucking sock. The only trick I've ever heard is putting a banana in with other unripened fruit, and the ethylene (...

Re: There must be a pony in here somewhere.

FFS, health insurance companies are now advising people to start GoFundMes to pay for bills. If you're talking about that letter making it's way across social media, it's from the transplant review board of the hospital, and there's some medicare regulation that says you have to be able to afford t...

Re: It's not the size of the screen...

I usually find cringe comedy so uncomfortable I have to leave the room. Same, hence my dislike of The Office . Parks and Rec moved away from cringe to awkward, which I think is different. The Michael character in The Office didn't know he was a weird jerk. Leslie Knopes does know she's a little too...

Re: It's not the size of the screen...

All of season 1 is completely skippable, from what I remember. Just jump right to "The Fight" (S3E13) and if that grabs you then go back to S2E1. If that episode is not your cup of tea you probably won't like the series. Yeah, cosign this. Season 1 was essentially The Office in a government setting...

It's not a war crime. It's an act of war, with dubious constutional authority, but it's not a war crime.
C'mon Kolohe, he's from Canada. Not holding the door for someone is a war crime up there.

Re: Thanksgiving: the most delicious time of the year

Made crock-pot beans using the leftover ham bone. Cheap Goya pink beans, ham bone with a fair amount of meat on it still, a couple tablespoons of molasses, couple bay leaves, and about 2 tsp. of cloves tied up in cheese cloth. Water to cover by an inch. I accidentally left the crock-pot on 'high' wh...

The Serious Eats smashed potatoes is a good call. Man, I might stop and pick up some red bliss and save the sweet potatoes for potato pancakes or hash.

The family that 'adopted' Sue and me (for some weird reason) is going to FL to be with one of their kids that lives down there, so we are spending our first thanksgiving alone in, maybe, ever. Going non-traditional and doing a small baked ham. Sweet potatoes, acorn squash, broccoli, and stuffing wil...

Hmm. See, I thought it was the other way 'round. The farther and faster you are from the center of gravity, the slower time goes for you. Which is why the trope in "hard" scifi is explorers returning to Earth after relativistic speeds come home to their cohort being dead & buried for oh so many year...

Known for raw fish, they are the best fryers of stuff in the world. That's saying something. Well, the thing to remember is in Japanese culture, if something is worth doing, then some folks are going to dedicate their life, and maybe their children's lives, to doing it right. I watched a weird litt...

Yeah, it hit the NYC - New Haven corridor (and beyond, I'm sure) at the worst possible time. My usual 10 minute ride home took almost an hour. My boss, who lives about 45 minutes away, turned back and spent the night at the office.

Weird fucking storm.

In those situations I've found it expedient to just put the TV covering the fireplace, not above the mantle. But then I'm the kind of cousin-fucking dirt person who can't tell jackfruit from breadfruit. Well, I'm a born-n-bred swamp yankee and can't tell jackfruit from breadfruit neither, but I do ...
