Re: What's Your Favorite TV Show?

In no particular order, I'd rewatch any of these from the beginning or stop & sit though the episode if I caught it while surfing:

True Detective S1
Game of Thrones
The Expanse
Legion
Twin Peaks

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

I'd be in favor of doing away with the EC if we went to a weighted system; I forget what it's called, but you basically 'score' the candidates on the ballot in order of preference.

On the topic of Warren and Trump, would the phrase "Warren totes stans Trump" be the correct structure? Trying to learn here.

Re: DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TWICE ANNUAL GRIPE THREAD

The thing with getting up early and having a few free hours before work is that it would stress me out. I wouldn't be able to enjoy the time becasue I'd always be checking the clock to make sure I wasn't going to be running late. I don't consider myself uptight by any means, but I was raised that yo...

Re: DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TWICE ANNUAL GRIPE THREAD

It’s intuitively obvious to the most casual observer that daylight is wasted before work, and daylight after work is both useful and joyful. So Standard time is worst time. That said, I too could compromise on half hour to end the madness that is true standard time. I continue to be deeply confused...

Re: Food

Does anyone use online cold food delivery of any sort? I use Porter Road as a butcher sometimes. I find myself anxious about what to do with the gel ice packs. They will very quickly take over your life if you order with some regularity. I'd like to be able to re-use them but I don't have a chest f...

Re: Random Observations C.A (306 pages is enough)

The Professional Business Speaker racket seems to have its own sort of weird fandom. These guys and gals are constantly referring to each other's books and groups and seminars, and I'm like, who the fuck are you talking about?

Re: OFFS: The Forsakening

What's weird is when I first started seeing the Momo image crop up, it reminded me of an image / picture / illustration I remember seeing when I was young, I think from a weird/horror story book or something, akin to like R.L. Stein books more recently.

Re: Food

Starting with dashi is a good idea. I'm also tempted to start with roasted bones as well, but was also trying to go as 'authentic' as I could first time out. I'm lucky that my local supermarket routinely has both neck bones and trotters for pretty cheap.

Re: Food

I tried making pork bone broth (tonkotsu) for ramen using the Serious Eats / Food Lab method, and it came out... not very good? I used pork neck bones instead of trotters, no fatback, and regular "western" aromatics with a slab of ginger and a star anise, and did the whole blanch the bones before ha...

Soo ... miso dressing using red instead of white miso. Using 2/3 the miso you'd use with white is not enough of a cut. Probably 1 tbsp miso to 1/4c vinegar and no more. That sht is potent. You spelled 'good' wrong. I make a red miso dressing/marinade for blanched asparagus or green beans out of mis...

The typical US palette has systematically eliminated most bitter things from all foods and so any presence of such at all can be jarring.
Which is why you get blank stares when ordering a negroni at dinner.

Re: Have you accepted Nothing as your lord and savior?

So yesterday we were invited to a friend's baby's baptism, which is fine, because we're considered an aunt & uncle and we like them and it's the thing to do. Only it wasn't really a baptism in a catholic, head-dunkin' way, as I'm used to, it was a naming ceremony in some protestant domination, and t...

Re: Dreams (not those crushed by the weight of unfulfilled life)

Had a good, then melancholy one last night. It was the holidays, and I was 'coming home' for Christmas to my family, although where I'd been was unclear. It was also odd that the 'home' wasn't a house I recognized, but I still felt comfortable there. My mother was also there, and it was so comfortin...
