Re: Elizabeth Warren's "Accountable Capitalism Act"

I'm not sure any company guilty of enough crimes to warrant possible dissolution can be said to be well-run. Profitable, perhaps, but well-run usually implied a certain amount of concern for legalities. That's an incredibly subjective criteria. Would you trust someone like Trump to make that distin...

Exxon spent 20 years fighting their fines and wound up paying 10% of the original judgment, and not even fully cleaning the land they despoiled.

And the statutory fines are such that it’s worth the gamble of getting away with it.
Especially when you consider that the nature of the law is such that they can run out the appeals process and let inflation take the edge off the fines, a la Exxon.

Re: Elizabeth Warren's "Accountable Capitalism Act"

Now do the same for unions. lol You mean have 40% of the directors for unions be elected by the employers? That would lulzatopia. Actually, if you dislike unions, a codetermination measure like this is probably one of the best ways to eliminate unions as we know them. Folding them into the governan...

Re: Elizabeth Warren's "Accountable Capitalism Act"

Now do the same for unions. lol In what sense? Require 75% approval of members in order to make political expenditures. That would actually be a relaxation of current regulations. They can't use dues money (the majority of their funding) for any partisan political activity, even if every single mem...

Re: Elizabeth Warren's "Accountable Capitalism Act"

As I've said before, calling yourself a capitalist and then saying "but only if capitalism does exactly what I want" is a little like saying "I think truffle-hunting dogs are a great way to find truffles; that's why I plan to keep them in my living room so I can get truffles from the comfort of my ...

I'm actually proud of my baklava. It was taught to be by a little old Greek lady who made me swear never to record the recipe anywhere. It has to be passed on person to person. If I ever attend a gathering, I'll make some to bring.

I weep for the lack of good falafel in this quadrant. With the good harissa that blows the drunken cobwebs out of your brain at 3AM after hitting the clubs. The falafel and the people are the only things I miss about DC.

Re: Random Observations C.A (306 pages is enough)

Fuck "society" setting the line, too. This is the society where nearly half the voting public actually wanted Donald Trump to be president. Where people freak out about how insufficiently Christian Starbucks' holiday coffee cups are. And yet, it's the society we live in. And the nature of the commo...

We imbue content providers in this country/society/era with a certain type of moral authority, which leads to certain responsibilities.

I think I posed this question here previously, but maybe not - Is it okay for FB to have a model that just says "look our thing is to provide a vehicle for shareable content people like - don't care if its real, don't care if it's awful, come talk to us when it rises to prosecutable stuff like thre...

I find this line of argumentation horrifying. This whole idea that regulation is in play if you just host "content" is ... I dunno yikes. Is regulation what keeps CBS from giving time to Holocaust deniers? If not, why would you automatically assume regulation would be required in this case? We imbu...

The increasing body of research that suggests that actively debating disagreement just solidifies people in the position they're already in leads me to think that Zuckerberg's "let everyone have a platform" is an unsatisfactory solution. Re: Orange is the new President

Distrust of the political class probably does encourage corruption, on the margin. Because why shouldn't our guy get his? Corruption almost certainly encourages distrust of the political class. I agree it is a self-reinforcing cycle, which is why it is more important to demand that the elites follo...

Trump runs his administration more like a mob boss. It certainly looks bad, and clearly it's not very efficient and often a chaotic mess, but that's just how he likes to do things. It's idiotic but I don't see it being criminal or some kind of shadowy cabal. Maybe its different for the high poobahs...

Did Cabinet Secretaries have to answer to Obama's golfing buddies? Or W.'s cycling partners? Clinton's buddies that he went to the strip club with? Papa Bush's yachting buddies? It might be several steps beyond anything that's happened before, but cynicism means never having say "that's fucked, yo."
