There's also a vaccine for meningitis B, which every teenager should have before they go live in petri dorms.

So I had an argument with my 'Homeopathic Practitioner' friend this evening who is, surprise, surprise, an anti-vaxxer. The 130 people who died in the Philippines 'died of pneumonia and meningitis.' Both of which there are vaccines for. And, if I understand correctly, both are more dangerous in peo...

Did you hang around for a while to see if you could get stung by said radioactive mud dauber and gain superpowers? Mud daubers look like wasps, but (un)fortunately don't sting or bite. I suppose you could try eating it. But the only superpower you'd get is being able to change into cape, mask, and ...

It may be that the courts are willing to rule against the President on military matters if the right case is brought by the right party,
This is not a military matter. It's a budgetary matter involving the military. Budgets are fundamentally a Congressional power.

Because of that episode we now have the legal precedent of "kinetic military action." Yeah, it was totally Libya that established that precedent and not Vietnam. The 1973 War Powers Resolution was passed specifically to undo the Vietnam precedent. And then Obama said "Lol, whatevz. Kinetic Military...

Now, this isn't quite true. The IRS changed the way it does withholding, so on average taxpayers got more in their paychecks and are now getting smaller refunds. On purpose, even though most people who get them see it as free money day, and interfering with it was bound to cause far more outrage th...

Is Lee Harvey Oswalds nephew available? Ooooh. Too soon. It was 50 years ago? When can I joke about JFK's death? After the last person what was alive at the time is dead. Phft! We were telling joke about it before I finished high school (1968): Aside from that Jackie, how did you enjoy Dallas? You ...

I dunno, it doesn't seem any crazier than the idea that another trillion dollar tax cut will somehow trigger an explosion of prosperity. Kind of like using the credit card to buy a bunch of crap versus sending all the money to televangelists. Both dumb, but at least the former leaves you with materi...

Re: Calling 2024 for AOC

I can see AOC losing a primary challenge in 2022. She's all sound and fury, and her base of support skews young (which is not a reliable group of voters). She won't be challenged in 2020 (runs against The Narrative), but I can see her district lines being redrawn after the 2020 census, providing th...

Without population growth the welfare state isn't sustainable. That's not necessarily true. We need population increases because we've spent decades not preparing for the day when the demographic pig in the python would hit the "non-productive" stage, and now our paygo lifestyle isn't sustainable w...

Actually, I'd say there's one mysterious aspect to Biff's success: how he didn't run afoul of organized crime at some point in his impossibly successful betting spree and end up dead. It could perhaps have been for the same reason casinos hire high rollers to serve as whales. Get people thinking th...

I maintain the only reason Shakespeare in Love beat Saving Private Ryan was because they also put up The Thin Red Line, and they cannibalized each other's votes. Now that I think about it, that's probably also true for Crash, with Brokeback and Capote being the cannibalized instead.

Shakespeare in love won an oscar? It won seven of them. Goddamn. And not the ones for technical achievement, either. Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay. So, the next time Gwyneth Paltrow tried to sell your wife jade vagina eggs, you'll know who to blame.
