Re: Orange is the new President

The trade war is terrible and he needs to quit fucking around and negotiate an actual deal. This is easily one of the worst things about his administration. There's absolutely no reason for it. He can't negotiate a deal, because he's not doing it to wring concessions out of the Chinese. It's being ...

Eh, both controlling freaks with Mommy issues. It comes through once the 50 Shades author climaxed a few times and started trying to add characterization.

Given that Black men got their franchise amendment 50 years before women, it shouldn't be as surprising as it is (for me as well).

Fun Fact: Fifty Shades of Grey is Twilight fanfic.
Yup. Of the "Wow, almost everyone is OOC..." variety, I would have to guess.
Only a little, that's the fucked-up part.

Re: Brexit: what say ye?

It is beginning to look like BOTH the Tories and Labour are falling apart: Amber Rudd quits government over Johnson's Brexit stance Amber Rudd has quit the cabinet and surrendered the Conservative whip saying she cannot "stand by" while "moderate Conservatives are expelled". The work and pensions s...

Re: Brexit: what say ye?

But judging by the freak show that is the Tories, BoJo makes some sense. And there are people who like him. He was, after all, elected mayor of London. Corbyn’s constituency seems much smaller outside Labour members. The leader of the party is the leader in Parliament, and literally the only people...

Re: Brexit: what say ye?

So I asked some of my coworkers why Corbyn is still leader of Labour and none of them had a good answer either. Best case is Lib Dems getting a plurality. Same reason BoJo is PM; the tiny, tiny chunk of people who care enough about parties to pay for membership love him, and they're the ones who ch...

So there's not much in the way of good experiments in UBI out there, but it occurs to me that we have a sort of "natural experiment" that's been going on for years: the prison system.

Re: Money for Nothing: the Universal Basic Income

f you have housing and food and basic entertainment covered by doing actual nothing, why not just keep trying to be an actor? Who said anything about entertainment? In my ideal system, food, a very basic set of clothing, and shelter would be guaranteed, but nothing else. If you want more, you have ...

This is a tax on growth to the extent growth requires lots of people trying hard things, which I believe is the case. If that's what growth requires, then we shouldn't have the growth we have, because the overwhelming majority of our population isn't people trying hard things. It's people doing nec...

That new skill should have value in the market. If it doesn’t, that skill is just another version of video games. A world of endless shitty garage bands is what I fear. At least half of that is because you find it morally distasteful, though. Personally, I have a lot more faith in that most innate ...

Re: Brexit: what say ye?

It's more that the leader of the party is chosen by paying members, and Corbyn is still wildly popular among them. Kind of like how BoJo became leader; the majority of the country hates him and wanted someone different, but the majority of the 150,000 party members wanted him.

Trump will be gone in a year and a half or five and a half years and then he'll have to choose between cashing in and remaining a populist rabble-monger. I'm pretty confident which way he'll go. Let’s be clear - you can’t get him out of there via impeachment precisely because he retains political support. So did Nixon, before the Watergate Hearings started. Do you think Nixon woke up one morning and the country had turned on him? It was the result of months of public testimony making clear...
