Re: The son of "What the hell are YOU staring at?"

Watched The Limey again. It'd been a while. Such a good movie. Getting Stamp, Fonda, and Newman all in it was an amazing trick. Also, this was the first time I noticed that "King Midas in Reverse" is played when Fonda's character is introduced. Cleverness on someone's part. Until reading just now on...

Re: tio's neato nature thread

On Saturday, I saw a hawk that I think was a Harris' Hawk. Hard to say for sure given all the color variations in hawks, but there are not that many in Arizona in the summer with a dark reddish-brown underside and tail feathers with white tips. This morning, I saw two hawks of some kind getting hass...

Re: The son of "What the hell are YOU staring at?"

Watched Basic Instinct recently. It's such a good film, and is relentlessly entertaining. De Palma may have "further developed the cinematic language of Hitchcock", but Verhoeven blew the walls off, and had even more fun with it. A nice English guy I know - his wife teaches senior highschool Englis...

Until I saw the commercial I really did think Steely Dan was one person.
At this point, Steely Dan is just one person, so you're not entirely wrong.

Re: Music for the Masses

People who like Phish should be hunted down and killed. A buddy of mine is from Vermont and loves Phish. He's tried to get me into them and their music does nothing for me. I can listen to the Dead without ever getting tired of them, but Phish (and every other jam band) just sounds like crap to me.

Re: What are you reading?

I wonder what the first story/novel is in Western lit that involves the majority of the story being a fantasy that takes place while the protagonist is dead/dying. "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is from 1890, which seems late for such a common plot device to enter circulation.

Re: The Well-Dressed Man

I'm looking for decent looking casual shoes that look relatively "professional." A little trendy even. Something you wear with jeans. Comfort is important of course. Looked at some discount places but didn't see anything I liked. I don't really like anything that is tennis shoe or sneaker-like. Esp...

Re: What are you reading?

I've done from Under the Greenwood Tree through The Mayor of Casterbridge in a summer. So I'm a bit more than halfway through. But the approach of Tess (which I read in high school) killed my momentum. That was the first Hardy novel I've read. I'd like to read Native, Madding, and Tess, but I'll ne...

Re: Powerful Mice in Space (The New Star Wars Gripe Thread)

Controversy - Telly Savalas was Sam Jackson of 70s Hmm, I think I can accept that. Charles Bronson was the Danny Trejo of the 70s. Nah, Charles Bronson was on his way up in the 70s and had plenty of starring roles. B movies, but they were still his, and they generally made money. And that's after b...

There's a good used bookstore in Phoenix, and I was looking at their website to find their hours when I saw their Twitter feed. It's full of retweeted comments about how American schools are killing fields and guns must be banned. Dammit.

Re: Powerful Mice in Space (The New Star Wars Gripe Thread)

I'm reminded of how the reputation of SF fans is "guys who can't get laid" and yet how much outright debauchery, up to and including orgies, happens at any sizable convention. Yeah, bathe daily and have a modicum of social skills and a willingness to strike out a couple times, and it's hard not to ...

I finally broke down and ordered some new undershirts from Mr Davis. I've been wearing some tone v-necks for a while, but I've either put on upper body muscle (so I like to think) or they've shrunk in the wash, which makes them uncomfortably snug in the shoulders and arms. I've been putting off orde...
