Re: What are you reading?

I've done from Under the Greenwood Tree through The Mayor of Casterbridge in a summer. So I'm a bit more than halfway through. But the approach of Tess (which I read in high school) killed my momentum. That was the first Hardy novel I've read. I'd like to read Native, Madding, and Tess, but I'll ne...

Re: Powerful Mice in Space (The New Star Wars Gripe Thread)

Controversy - Telly Savalas was Sam Jackson of 70s Hmm, I think I can accept that. Charles Bronson was the Danny Trejo of the 70s. Nah, Charles Bronson was on his way up in the 70s and had plenty of starring roles. B movies, but they were still his, and they generally made money. And that's after b...

The Obamas are coming to Netflix. The former president and first lady have a multiyear deal to produce shows and films for the streaming service.
No thank you
I thought Trump was the one who ran for President to launch his own TV series.

There's a good used bookstore in Phoenix, and I was looking at their website to find their hours when I saw their Twitter feed. It's full of retweeted comments about how American schools are killing fields and guns must be banned. Dammit.

Re: Powerful Mice in Space (The New Star Wars Gripe Thread)

I'm reminded of how the reputation of SF fans is "guys who can't get laid" and yet how much outright debauchery, up to and including orgies, happens at any sizable convention. Yeah, bathe daily and have a modicum of social skills and a willingness to strike out a couple times, and it's hard not to ...

Re: The Well-Dressed Man

I finally broke down and ordered some new undershirts from Mr Davis. I've been wearing some tone v-necks for a while, but I've either put on upper body muscle (so I like to think) or they've shrunk in the wash, which makes them uncomfortably snug in the shoulders and arms. I've been putting off orde...

Re: cars and how they get that way

The reason is that the public is not buying cars. They buy trucks and little trucklets that have horrible space utilization. Along those lines, I often forget just how much many (most?) people dislike cars/driving. For them, cars are an appliance (and maybe status signal) and driving is a necessary...

Finished Crash today. I'm about 900 pages (of 1200) into the complete short stories of Ballard as well. Crash is definitely the most Ballardian of Ballard's books that I've read, but I think High Rise is the better book. Crash feels like it would've worked better at half its length, which isn't too ...

The other day I was looking for an Earthquaker Devices Monarch or a Wampler Catapulp, but settled for trying an Earthquaker Devices Acapulco Gold.
