Re: If We Build It, They'll Probably Still Come

Cali bans private prisons, including ICE detention centers . The private prisons angle is a joke of course (Blues can stop worrying about the justice system, now!), but including ICE detention centers in that is a shot across the frickin' bow. The four affected facilities are a significant part of ...

Finding ferns and fungus on another world would be quite the discovery. But if we can't find anyone to talk to, it doesn't mean that much.
Ferns and fungi would be more interesting to talk to than some of my coworkers.

Re: In the Not Too Distant Future...

Ideally I would like at least one episode with a short. I would love to recommend the Last Clear Chance short, but Radar Secret Service is such a slog. The Gumby short is a good one. I don't recall the movie it's with, though. Edit - - appears to have been with The Screaming Scull, which is a fun o...

I finally get to ask this question because I encountered someone today who was unfamiliar: what is/are the best episodes of MST3k to introduce someone to the show? Here's the poll from the 2016 Thanksgiving marathon: https://mst3k.fandom.com/wiki/Top_100_Episodes_of_MST3K Space Mutiny, Final Sacrif...

That new skill should have value in the market. If it doesn’t, that skill is just another version of video games. A world of endless shitty garage bands is what I fear. At least half of that is because you find it morally distasteful, though. Personally, I have a lot more faith in that most innate ...

That's a REALLY novel reading of the right of the people peaceably to assemble - which I've never heard anyone refer to as anything other than the right to peaceful public protest. There are a number of Supreme Court decisions that interpret assembly as including freedom of association in non-polit...

Those men are fragile. The people they are criticizing are also fragile. Fucking everyone should be eating doses ...

I did like the series about catching the unibomber off his writing style. That struck me as much more solid detective work.
Even that was based on the media publishing his manifesto and his brother turning him in.

Re: The son of "What the hell are YOU staring at?"

One question that occurred to me when watching Mindhunter: when has all this profile/psych stuff actually caught someone? BTK sent letters to the media and police which contained metadata which eventually led to his arrest. Green River was caught by DNA matching, as was Golden State recently.

I don't think it takes a particularly conservative viewpoint to be skeptical of the motivations behind the NYT running a series about how America was Really and Truly founded on slavery. Does anyone actually believe it's going to be a scholarly, dispassionate inquiry? It doesn't take a rocket surgeo...
