Re: Orange is the new President

Like I say, WaPo is late to the party on this one. Reason has had this story for at least a year. Then again, Reason as Clickhole.... https://twitter.com/cavalorn/status/654934442549620736?lang=en Yeah. The "I didn't think they meant us" thing is pretty universal. Re: Orange is the new President

Oh come the fuck on. You expect me to believe the butterfly sanctuary owner, whose sanctuary is being destroyed by the wall is a Trump voter? This has to be parody. People have asked me, “Didn’t you listen to Trump when he said that he would build a wall?” I didn’t take the idea seriously during th...

Re: OFFS: The Forsakening

Maybe this is a US thing, but the credit card companies are adamant that businesses not charge additional fees or higher prices for using a card. So I don't know that this is any worse than a shop that raises the price for cash customers to match their card price. Another peeve I have with 'no cash...

Another peeve I have with 'no cash' places is the transaction fees bank charge. A $2.00 coffee is suddenly $2.75.

I thought more than 2/3. You guys don’t have co pays right? No co-pays on basic care. The Fraser Institute (a libertarian-ish econ think-tank) has estimated that even a $5 co-pay would eliminate most of the wait lines in emergency rooms and save billions of dollars, but it's a political non-starter...

Re: There must be a pony in here somewhere.

Uh didn't SCOTUS already decide the penaltax is constitutional? Is there any reason they would actually review this case? That's what I remember, which is why this case raised my eyebrows. Seems the Texas Yudge is trying to over-rule the SCOTUS. But if the Texas and Federal AG's decided not to appe...

The interesting possibility is if the AG of Texas or the US AG decide not to appeal the verdict.

I think this is the item. The abstract doesn't give the numbers, which are in the full report linked at the bottom of the page.

You don't have to be a fan of Canada Revenue Agency or the IRS to approve of this:

The same call centers do IRS scams in the US.

Ah, gotcha. English saddle, I guess. Yep: https://www.doversaddlery.com/images/xl/00TR143.jpg All this time I thought it was a cowboy saddle. Hell, I'd probably have fallen off. I broke a tree once, but it was an old saddle, roped a maverick bull running downhill and forked a tree, him on one side,...

Re: There must be a pony in here somewhere.

no incentive to actually have employer-provided healthcare IMO that would be a good thing -- the idea that health insurance is something you get through your job rather than something you get on your own is a huuuuuge problem with the current (and pre-Obamacare) status quo. Even in the land of NHS,...

I just got off the phone with Custom Saddlery in Aiken, SC, where my saddle is presently in for repair. The saddle tree needs to be replaced, which normally costs US$690. Before I sent the saddle to them, I was told that it was out of warranty (5 years). I saw the estimate and they were going to wa...

Politicians might not care about the cost to us, but some of the people that they have to keep happy care very much about the bond markets. We cannot have a bunch of aircraft carriers AND single-pay AND tax rates that get them re-elected AND anything approaching economic stability. We can have two ...

Time to go cross eyed staring at our future so I can choose the least destructive among them. At some point, you don't need to look too close, because the actual thing imposed (if any) is going to fought over (and fought against) by people who don't give a shit what we think. In the Senate, there are a lot more Red seats up than Blue seats in 2020. The Blues could win control of both houses. If they get a Blue president, I think some form of Universal Plan is inevitable.
