Re: Occam, Trump, and Russia

At this point, I don't think it matters what the report says. Mueller could be 99.44% sure that there was collusion but didn't have the evidence to prosecute, but the narrative now is "Trump Innocent" (in the minds of anyone outside of Blue partisans and "Never Trumpers".). Any further attempt to pu...

Re: Whither the GOP? (post-Trump edition)

Reading through that is like reading a Creationist apologetic rejecting all the stuff they don't understand.

Also, I was amused by the appearance of the paleologism 'jet-setter'. I thought that phrase went out of use in the 1970s when air travel went mass-market.

Re: Occam, Trump, and Russia

The one thing that always bothered me about the notion of Trump colluding with Putin was that it implied that Trump had the good sense to know when to shut up.

Re: Occam, Trump, and Russia

If Russia didn't dangle anything in front of Trump or reach any deal with him, then we're left with the disturbing reality that Trump sucks up to Putin because he genuinely likes a Russian dictator better than he likes, well, just about anyone of any consequence in America. If the last 26 months di...

I am very unhappy with the Canadian Federal Government Budget, which projects a deficit of C$18 billion this year.

But, when I look at the projected US budget deficit if US$980 billion, I feel like a passenger on a B737 Max.

This is now completely crossing over between this thread and the EC one, but I for one don't really give a shit about democracy per se. I care about rights and freedoms. Democracy is kind of a secondary goal, and it tends to be better at protecting rights and freedoms than other forms of government...

Re: MARCH MADNESS

I got to thinking about the odds of a 'perfect bracket' for someone who was extremely skilled at picking winners. It is very easy to calculate, but none the less interesting. For example, if you were able to pick winners 99% of the time, you have a 53.09055% chance of picking a perfect bracket. It g...

Re: A thread for mocking politicians

You're still missing my point. The idea that 51% of a voting body has a moral right over anyone in the other 49% is what the issue is. They act like that only good things can come of that. That a majority decision in itself is justification for whatever the majority decides. It's foolishly simplist...

Who stays away and spends the night looking for lightning? Not getting the reference. When Caesar was consul in 59 BCE, his Co-Consul was Bibulus. The two detested one another, but Caesar dominated the Senate. In an attempt to thwart Caesar, Bibulus stayed home and spent his nights watching for lig...

I'm not that familiar with all the different methods people have come up with. My main point is that proponents of alternate systems should have to demonstrate that there is some significant gain switching to that system. Change just to change isn't a particularly smart way to do things. It's not l...
