Re: Observations of the Random sort

That's what I have! My monitor is in front of my face and my keyboard is at the level of my hands.

If I raise my chair so that my hands can type comfortably on my desktop, then I'm looking down at my monitor, which doesn't make that much sense.

Re: Observations of the Random sort

I feel like this might be a body-shape thing but dhex makes a good point. The keyboard tray is right at the level my arms and hands rest at, because that's how high my chair is, because where else would it be? And half the time the keyboard tray is still under the damn desk. If I had the keyboard on...

Re: Observations of the Random sort

I'm pretty sure keyboard trays are horrid ergonomically. Putting your keyboard and mouse effectively in your lap is bleh with your wrists all bent back like that. Plus, they always hit my knees whenever I tried to use one. I think only if they're not set up well. You want your wrists straight, and ...

Re: Observations of the Random sort

Dealing with the connection being intermittently shaky was too annoying, and I can't see any benefit at all from the wirelessness---it's not like I'm going anywhere other than my computer desk with it. It's one less cord cluttering up the desk, which is nice. Why is the cord on your desk? The mouse...

I will never use a wireless mouse again any time in the near future.

Re: Orange is the new President

It annoys me that Rs are treating this like some sort of moral cleansing for the GOP. Moore lost by 1.5 percentage points. He hardly got bounced*. A Republican won an open special election in MA over policy annoyance and a bad campaigner. In AL it took someone that was twice removed as a judge for ...

Re: Orange is the new President

In all seriousness, Trump managed to pick two Republicans in Alabama that both lost their race. How much air cover does Congress give him now? How much was Trump and how much was Moore? The RNC must be hoping it was mostly Moore, because going from a 28 point spread in favor of the GOP in 2016 to l...

Re: No touching! - sexual impropriety thread

Sure, so both one and two involve the guy acting like an unsocialized idiot. But the middle category definitely happens; a good example is "a homeless person trying to talk to most people under, like, any circumstances whatsoever." Almost anything they're going to do will be inappropriate/intrusive,...

Re: No touching! - sexual impropriety thread

In practice a lot of what "creepy" actually means is "does not accurately read the reactions of other people and respond appropriately." Sometimes the emphasis is on the last part, because the creepy person is a jerk. Sometimes the emphasis is on the first part, because the creepy person is clueles...

Re: No touching! - sexual impropriety thread

That's all true.

But I'm also having that reaction even assuming all allegations are true. The first allegation is "that's awkward and he shouldn't have done that, but not awful." And then the third allegation is of actual rape.

Re: No touching! - sexual impropriety thread

The thing that's most often surprised me about this is that often the first accusation comes out and I'll say to myself "that's not appropriate, but it's not awful." And then five more people will make accusations and I have to go "okay, no, that's awful." See e.g. Julian Sanchez's pair of tweets on...

Bryan Singer reportedly sued for allegedly raping 17-year-old He allegedly forced his cock into the mouth of a 17 year old boy. Classy. You know, just a few days ago a friend was telling me she was waiting for this to drop, because everyone in entertainment knows he's a shithole of a child-abusing ...

It took me a few months of regular work to get the flexibility to squat properly.

I find that that stretch makes a lot of things better and takes pressure off my back if I do it regularly.

Re: Market Failure!

Nah, that's basically the reason. The volume is independent of the circumference of your torso, but it's hard to measure the volume directly. The measurement you can take easily is circumference, so that's what the sizing is based off of. You still have to do some adjustments, but I suspect it's bet...

Re: Market Failure!

The cup letter is "Circumference at biggest point minus band circumference." An extra inch of circumference is more volume the bigger your base is. Theoretically you're supposed to be able to take two measurements and then know your size. But of course there are lots of little things about angle and...

Re: No touching! - sexual impropriety thread

And from what I can tell, Barton genuinely was a victim. This makes me wonder if there's more hiding under the surface. Resigning over consensual dick pics strikes me as an overreaction. This is true, and I 100% reserve the right to, like Disraeli, change my mind when the facts change. But between ...

Yeah, I do boneless skinless because that's what I can buy in bulk frozen, and also because deboning is annoying.

I have never managed to get all the inedibles out of slow-cooked chicken thighs before. I'm pulling little bits of gristle out of my jambalaya all week.

Re: Thanksgiving: the most delicious time of the year

I believe that, although Kenji says you get good results with sous videing a chicken breast and then searing it afterwards. I mostly sous vide pork and beef, and sometimes boneless skinless chicken thighs. The sous vide isn't a replace for roasting the chicken. It's a replacement for doing chicken a...

Re: Thanksgiving: the most delicious time of the year

Rub it down with oil and spices, shove a thermometer in, put it in at 250, come back when the thermometer beeps.

Used to have the highest "people are impressed" to effort ratio of anything I could do with protein. Has been eclipsed by sous vide, so I mostly do that these days instead.
