Re: Setec Astronomy

No. Some people had fixes out. Microsoft patched before the reveal, and BSD did as well. I think the core linux app was patched by the reveal as well---it's patched now. But most of the router companies haven't issued patches, and neither have android or ios. There's a few lists going around like th...

Re: Rand Paul.....sigh.

In a Senate with 51 Republicans, the Republican Party is less powerful than if it had 52 Republicans, but each individual Republican Senator becomes more valuable. If I were a Republican Senator I'd be hoping for 50 Republicans (with Pence to give them the edge). Then absolutely Republican Senator ...

Re: Food

I know this is my hobbyhorse, but remember that drying out and staling are not the same thing. I know, as I alluded to when I mentioned that exposure to humidity makes bread go stale faster (which presumably explains why open bread in my refrigerator gets rock-hard stale in a shockingly short time)...

We're talking about 100+ cookies for a week . Are YOU the Cookie Monster? It's a diet thing. Oats are one of the few things that don't turn my intestines into pain. Making it into cookies makes it easier to manipulate portion sizes and I don't have to find a microwave or stove to cook up a ...

Re: Food

I would expect refrigerating them to make them go bad faster. I know refrigeration speed staling; it can easily speed drying out as well. I think any good solution is going to involve a brief rebake before you eat them. I've heard people suggest rolling the cookie dough into a log and then freezing ...

I'm really confused about why MS was able to get a patch out already, and Google is expecting to take most of a month. Because it's a flaw in the spec, not the implementation, and MS is historically extremely OK rolling out implementations that don't conform to the spec. So what, MS rolled out a fi...

I'm really confused about why MS was able to get a patch out already, and Google is expecting to take most of a month. I know the bug hit Android harder, but it doesn't at least sound like in a way that should make it that much harder to fix. (I realize that wpa-supplicant isn't actually a Google co...

How do you clean them, and how hard is it? Well, they're shiny plastic, and most of the stuff they get on them is earwax, so you really just wipe them off with a tissue after you use them. If you need to wash them, you can take the little attenuator cartridge out (it's a small button, like a collar...

So, uh, that wifi exploit . Holy shit. Technology companies are starting to respond to a new Wi-Fi exploit affecting all modern Wi-Fi networks using WPA or WPA 2 encryption. The security vulnerabilities allow attackers to read Wi-Fi traffic between devices and wireless access points, and in some cas...

Terro liquid bait
This seems to have worked much better than the solid bait I used a few years back last time I had this problem.

But what are the debt to revenue ratios for those companies? Sure, the company isn't worthless if it has a lot of debt so long as its assets are higher than its debt, but if its debt is X and its revenues are X/20 is that considered healthy, even if they have a lot of assets? Presumably they benefi...

Trump apparently thinks, or at least has made a statement to the effect that improvements in the economy equate to reduction in the national debt. I won't be surprised if wishful thinking on the part of those on his side makes this a new received truth. My father has for years made the actually rea...

After three years of living in this apartment, the ants finally found a way in. Now I actually have to keep the kitchen clean. Bonus annoyance tonight: there's a bunch of ants crawling around in the kitchen trash can. But there's no ants going to or from the can, so I have no idea where they came fr...

Ah, Mark " Obama is unelectable " Penn with some stellar analysis. I guess now he knows why Obama was popular. Also, his point about the NFL protests fails to point out that kneeling for the flag protest became more popular due to Trump. I felt his point was more it's not affecting his polling with...

The title is misleading. One of the two components of missing mass (the baryonic component, made of ordinary matter) has been found. That's hardly half the matter, if we measure the amount of matter in terms of mass. The dark matter (non-baryonic) has 5x as much mass and its nature remains a myster...

The whole concept of organized gambling depends on people not behaving rationally. Depends on the game. Craps and roulette, yes. Poker, not so much. Craps has the best odds in the house. It's the only game where you can get even odds. How do you get even odds in craps? I thought you couldn't quite ...

It definitely wasn't Holmes taking the piss out of Watson in the original---the character was one hundred percent serious.

There are 812,851,200 possible arrangements in a 6×6 Latin square design, if Wolfram Alpha is correct. That seems like too many. It's 812,851,200 if you count rearrangements like "flip it upside down" and "swap all the 5s and 6s". It's 9,408 if you require the first row and column both to be in nat...
