Re: Home $weet Home

I'm slowly building a habit of actually cleaning shit and it's being really nice.

Re: Words I Happen to Dislike

I've only seen "stan" as positive.

I also thought (and a few friends I asked agreed with me) that it was just a shortening of "stand behind" or "stand up for".

Re: What time do you normally go to bed?

I can go to bed before midnight. I'm generally pretty sleepy around like 9 PM, especially if I've been pushing myself. But according to my body, this is a nap. I will wake up before 2 AM, ready to go, and get super tired again around 7 or 8 AM.

Re: Random Observations C.A (306 pages is enough)

My tumblr friends call this "distributed hypocrisy."

It is somewhat related to motte-and-bailey stuff, though.

I said 1 am to 4 am, but that's not really accurate because I'm up past five on a regular basis.

Re: When journalism goes bad

I will admit that I haven’t read anything from the NYT 1619 Project, but I am interested. The weird thing is how many people whose job it is to read and critique these sorts of things have the vapors about it and haven’t read a single word of it. Like criticism of it would be understandable if you ...

Re: Twitter!

I remember reading an analysis that that graph is not quite accurate, so it's probably only like 40-50% who average less than a drink a week. (The graph maker did some imputation from two incommensurable sets of statistics--something like drawing the low end of the table from self-report, and attrib...

Re: On the modern electric guitar

It's a three-leg stand, which actually causes all sorts of issues for the Roomba--which also has a tendency to climb up one of the legs and then get stuck. The roomba was knocking over the entire stand the few times this came up, but I was also slightly concerned about whether it bumping into the gu...

Re: On the modern electric guitar

Okay, so this is a dumb question, but y'all might have some insight into it. I have a medium-nice classical acoustic-electric guitar, and I'd been supporting it on a cheap stand I got from an ex-girlfriend. I also have a roomba. These two things have not typically interacted very well, and at the mo...

Re: Intellectualism: Dark and Webbed

If you think that IQ tests have the sort of predictive power that parental socioeconomic status does, I find that hard to square with your claim that they're no more predictive or scientific than Myers-Briggs. Do you think that studying socioeconomic status is unscientific?

Re: Intellectualism: Dark and Webbed

While acknowledging that you had the experience you had, in general scores on IQ tests and also on tests like the SAT are pretty stable, and pretty predictive. (I'll accept your claim that it's "as easy to improve your score in IQ as in anything else" if you'll concede that it's not actually that ea...

I just hate the way people who talk about "community" often sound like their talking about a garden, that they own.
To be fair, some people want to be owned as well.

Re: Worthwhile intertubez finds

That's really cool! I'd always wondered why it felt like both Koine Greek and Medieval Latin had grammars that were converging to something very similar to modern English grammar. Only in Jadaguland. But seriously. Homeric and Attic Greek have really complicated grammars with tons of inflection. Ko...

Re: Silicon Valley Disrupts Its Own Ass

Peter Thiel makes zero sense. Also, I love how he gets on his high horse about interesting technology (and how social media isn't it) and furrows his brow about state surveillance while he's made the bulk of his money from Facebook and Palantir. I'm a little weirded out by the way Tyler Cowen is en...

No, please! Tell us what you really think about "Mayor Pete"! Well, he did. Eventually. tl:dr - Pete Buttigieg should smash the state because otherwise he's part of the patriarchy. I found that piece entertaining in a train-wreck-y way until he actually got to talking about Buttigieg, at which poin...

It was a paid internship plus college credit. That's harder to walk away from. Ah my bad about the pay. Maybe I'm just out of touch but I still don't see the college credit as that huge.
