Re: Our National Pastime

I agree. I think a 20% increase in playing field dimensions would do a lot of good in most sports. Unsure if needed as much in the NFL. Except soccer, where they should probably shrink the field 20%. Increasing everything by 20% would leave more open space and therefore provide more scoring opportu...

Re: Petty annoyances

People like to take pictures for Yelp, reviews on Google, etc. However, at bars, the most common picture seems to be "glass of beer with bar behind it". Dear people: pretty much every glass of beer at a bar looks exactly like every other glass of beer at a bar. Stop taking that picture, because it ...

Re: H. sapiens floridensis - A thread for Florida Man

My sixteen-year-old son recently shared a fun little activity with me... every time you read a "Florida man" headline, don't look at the picture, and mentally read them as all being about the same person: "Florida-Man", a would-be superhero with terrible decision-making skills.

His "wisdom" included the beloved-by-me quote, "I once communed with a great and ancient redwood tree in Muir Woods CA, while under the effects of a strong dose of DMT. Trust me, these giant trees at least are far more ‘conscious’ and transcendentally aware than any animal -- including us." That wa...

Re: Orange is the new President

It's impossible to know if either candidate had anything like the "will of the people" because our first-past-the-post voting system hides information about true voter preferences from us. Personally, I suspect a huge proportion of the votes for Trump, and a similarly huge proportion of the votes fo...

Re: To Infinity War and Beyond: the MCU Thread with Spoilers

Speaking of Infinity War and spoilers, now that it's out on DVD, if I've already been spoiled on the ending, is it still worth watching? Are there lots of funny parts and good interactions, or is it pretty much all building up to the ending? Still worth watching, I think. The interactions between T...

Re: Elizabeth Warren's "Accountable Capitalism Act"

Arguably, the real problem here is, whatever the hell it is about the current status quo that enables such individuals to avoid criminal consequences IF they are working for a corporation. This, in my mind, is the nut* of the issue right here. It's not really that "GM" was willfully negligent; afte...

That pecan joke is funny because JasonL is comparing pecans -- a not-particularly-active sort of thing -- with horses, which are very different. This juxtaposition of horse-based imagery with a small and unassuming nut makes the humor work.
