Can I bring cheeses? Whatever cheeses are super new and super sought-after in the time period. Plus, you know, sometimes I want a snack, even if it is against the rules.

Re: Calling 2020 for Entropy

Per Warren's comment about not being able to repossess an education, I'm not sure I see the difference between someone who runs up $100k's in debt pursuing a college degree or pursuing a failed business or, for that matter, maxing out plastic and home equity loans on hookers and blow. Indeed, my ow...

Re: Who measures the measurements?

The original definition of the meter was that 10 million meters (i.e. 10^7 meters) should equal the distance from the equator to the North Pole, to make navigational calculations easy. Let's suppose that the dominant societies had adopted base 12 number systems. A logical way of defining a "duodeci...

Yep. Our state GOP has largely decided to embrace the Trump, and as a result, we now have a Democratic supermajority. This is bad, of course, because the Dems are really, really bad about coming up with half-baked ideas, running them past nobody with any expertise, and then passing them into law (wi...

I suspect the Facebook algorithms are based on "how many people report this as porn and who are those people?" rather than "what does this image contain?". The state of the art in computing is still terrible at identifying images. It's good at identifying a *particular* image (i.e. "Is that picture ...

On the other hand, isn't e-discovery in many ways easier than paper discovery? If I want to find one of a zillion different files on my computer, I can do a search for a given word or phrase I recall that document having, and the computer gets it in a matter of seconds. In this case, I think one is...

That's great. I'm on board with it, but here in the USofA it's outside the overton window, got on a plane and flew to Canada. I'd settle for simply running the prison humanly, such that prisoners don't live in constant fear of abuse from guards and fellow prisoners. A group of Oregon state legislat...

On Sunday night it started snowing. This, in itself, isn't unusual; we get a little bit of snow once or twice a year, usually. Maybe an inch or two. Except it kept snowing. A lot. Got around 14" at my house, which is more than I've ever seen 'round these parts. And then the power went out. Turns out...

It's also worth noting that each of them picks up exactly where the previous one leaves off, so you can watch them in a row like one really long movie; just skip the credits and go straight into the next.
