Re: Recommend a good translation

The Fitzgerald was the standard when I read it in college. I recall it being pretty tedious, but I'm not sure whether that was Fitzgerlad's fault or Homer's. I think an inquiry to your colleagues in the English or Classics departments would have better results than a bunch of internet randos. or po...

Re: You Learn Something New Every Day

The paper argues that our early ancestors acquired a taste for fat by eating marrow scavenged from the skeletal remains of large animals that had been killed and eaten by other predators. The argument challenges the widely held view among anthropologists that eating meat was the critical factor in ...

Re: Twitter!

I seem to recall Dave Weigel having a fairly good-looking face (in a "cute and non-threatening so that pre-pubsecent girls are likely to have a crush on him" kind of way). Why the HELL does he insist on that 70s-porn-star hairstyle and mustache? His profile pic on twitter is his disembodied hair an...

I think the guys doing The Expanse might be able to do a good job turning Hyperion into a semi-limited TV series.

Yeah, that's dhex level writing and John the Melitary Laywer level wrong. Smashburger is pretty much on par with all the other fast-casual burger joints in terms of individual burger quality, and the addition of sweet potato fries, the local-option burger (which in Colorado is a green-chile-based bu...

Re: the entirely civil and thoughtful israel thread

I don't see what's anti-Semitic about "It's all about the benjamins, baby" (specifically in response to Greenwald's tweet) -- that's such a well-known hip-hop slang term for $100 bills (or large sums of money in general) that even *my* white self has known about it for years. Perhaps find someone a...

I saw someone earlier say his mnemonic device was: You can affect an effect, but you can't effect an affect. Please help. That's... that's impressively useless. A - you could still get them backwards because if you get 'affect' and 'effect' mixed up in normal usage ... it seems like get them mixed ...

I caught the tail end of our local NPR call-in show; I have no idea what the topic of the day was. But the host was saying, "One in three Americans" (I assume she meant adult Americans) "doesn't have a college degree? That's shocking in the way poverty is shocking, or climate change!" I could maybe...

Re: To Infinity War and Beyond: the MCU Thread with Spoilers

The real wonder for a web geek like me is peering at the code and seeing that it's perfectly modern stuff, without imagemaps or tables. It's just cunningly recreated, like a carbon-fiber hybrid Model-T. I was idly wondering about that. Are most browsers today still compatible with a geocities-style...

My wife has a Steelcase Leap. I prefer the CXO, myself. Balance ball is probably a good option, but you are definitely limited for other uses (like reclining while watching TV or videos at the computer). Are you supposed to have some sort of retainer device, or is the point that it can roll around ...

Oh yeah I'm not gonna get in the ring with one. Just was wondering how the hell someone survived long enough to choke out a 120lb+ big cat, and the answer was it wasn't.

Also apparently females can max out at 65lbs.

FWIW the cougar was basically a tween, only 80lbs and less than a year old. I actually feel bad for the poor kitteh, not that I can fault the guy. Just wish the kitteh hadn't made the mistake of going after an apex predator.
