Re: If We Build It, They'll Probably Still Come

I hafta say that I am a bit skeptical about that Sophie’s Choice story. It’s just too perfect for the narrative. But if there’s anything I’ve learned in the past couple years it’s not to underestimate the capacity for cbp types to use their captives for horrifying jokes so maybe?

Re: Inequality

I mean, you could use it in certain circumstances but in toto it's too incoherent for what the author thinks it's for.

Re: Inequality

After reading the above, the whole thing seems way over-simplified. In any school with more than 500 students I have ever seen, there are numerous cliques and factions: The Grinds - the kids who study hard and are serious about school, but at least socially functional. The Nerds/dweebs - social out...

Just for color, median US household net worth is like $68k. Top quintile is like $630k. That top quintile seems very high. It seems high that the top fifth of U.S. households have a net worth of $630k? Including home equity, retirement savings of whatever sort, etc? When I first misread it as 'inco...

Using their ahem nomenclature I was back row SES with front row values in a back row school environment and was also something of a prat which doesn't help. Re: Inequality

Probably stupid question: does "net worth" mean assets less debts? E.g. if I have $1,000 in the bank and $50,000 in student loan debt, my net worth is negative? This is my understanding but I just realized I'm 99% certain that comes entirely from a guess based on 'net' and 'worth' and not some form...

That's net worth, not income. I can buy that.

Close:
Trump’s “go back” comments were nativist, xenophobic, counterfactul and politically stupid. But they simply do not meet the standard definition of racist, a word so recklessly flung around these days that its actual meaning is being lost.

I'm very much enjoying Blown Away on Netflix. It's a glassblowing competition show and it's lovely.

Yeah, I looked to another source for my inspiration. A different king, and his band of knights, and their strategy when things got a little too rough in their quest for The Holy Grail.

Obvs the OG quote was WRT Peter Theil*, money quote: China has been stealing our intellectual property and conducting cyber-warfare, and China is an unusually dirty country dirtying up the planet. Trump’s 25% tariffs on China should be reframed as a carbon tax. I haven't seen anything out of the Rea...

Minor quibble: If Putin took the Baltics then he wouldn't need to take anything out of Poland to reach Kaliningrad. But, yeah, it wasn't solely the US military-industrial complex that prevented Russia from becoming America's bestest friend in the early 90's. Bush said "I'm the one that loves you ba...

I agree that offering to put 1991 Russia firmly into the 'ally' camp would've been reasonably good if it could've been pulled off, but IIRC the reaction to that was decidedly more 'in your fucking dreams' from Russian leadership, even if Yeltsin himself might've gone for it. If Germany and France ar...
