Re: Thanksgiving: the most delicious time of the year

Roast turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans almandine, cranberry sauce (jellied for me, berried for my wife), dinner rolls and pumpkin pie.

That was a pretty good military sci-fi episode, but it had 10 minutes or so of lag at the end, and an unsatisfying conclusion.
Agreed. Of course, it was supposed to be a cliff-hanger, but I don't see anyone with bated breath (he said, stringing up metaphors) until January.

We'll be tired of the winning before this is over. We'll so glad when it's over that we won't care. Unless, of course, we are talking about the incoming Pence administration on November 6, 2024. Or the Clarke/Moore administration. Hold the phone, now! Let's not be too hasty to overlook the possibil...

UPDATE: Finally figured out how to become the owner so I could give myself permission to change the file. Did so. Still Error 651. Anyway, thanks again, Mo.

If you just used Linux, you wouldn't have this problem!

(You'd have other, more, and more confusing problems. But you definitely wouldn't have this exact problem).

Thanks, Mo. That's a help but, alas, now when I try to modify the file logged in as Administrator, I'm told I need permission from, um, my original user account. Honestly, this is driving me crazy.

Okay, I'm obviously missing something here, but there is only one account, "D.A. Ridgely, Administrator," which is how I automatically log in every time the computer is started.

Re: The Techno-Bleg Thread

Are you using the administrator account on the computer? I think in those versions of Windows, even if your secondary account has "administrator" privileges, there are still some things that can't be done except by the primary administrator account. Is it on Win7 or Win10? Win7. As far as I know, m...

Re: The Techno-Bleg Thread

Has anyone using Windows 7 through 10 trying to establish a broadband connection had to deal with an Error 651 problem and actually fixed it? I know it's a problem with the computer, not with the router/modem or the ISP itself. I've watched various YouTube fixit videos and read various fixit sites a...

Re: Just the Tax

But rent is just paying for the use of something. No value is produced because you're renting something. *sigh* The tenant values the premises more than the money he spends on rent and the landlord values the money more than leaving the premises vacant (or whatever other opportunity costs he may ha...

Re: Just the Tax

Home ownership may be an objectively bad form of saving and investing. Yes, it's illiquid, although that's actually one of the reasons it works as a method of saving among most of the middle class and working class. Yes, it impedes mobility which, in turn, makes recovering from unemployment harder. ...

It's been my observation and, to a limited degree, experience that the more investment income one has, the less one supports taxing investment income. BTW, on the topic of consumption tax exemptions for food and other necessities. While "progressive" has a neutral sense as well as a political sense,...

Re: To Infinity War and Beyond: the MCU Thread with Spoilers

I didn't like Thor: Ragnarok . Other people have been praising it for its unusually frequent comic relief, but comic relief only works as a dramatic tool if it's actually relieving something like, um, oh, I don't know... suspense? tension? drama? Yes, Jeff Goldblum is delightfully over-the-top. The ...

I doubt Trump's approval ratings, no matter how low they may go, will nudge rank and file Republicans to jump ship until they see him dragging them, personally, down and out of office. Moreover, if the Republicans who are cutting and running are replaced by Bannon approved Brownshirts who go on to w...
