Re: Masculinity, so fragile

I'm just going to go ahead and admit that the first time I read Jennifer's latest comment, I read "Disney put out a movie about some little girls who are poor but eventually they save their penises ...."

Re: Masculinity, so fragile

I, for one, prefer it when these cults of personality come and go without my ever having to pay attention. (Pretty much like most music from the 80s and 90s.)

You'd actually be hard pressed to find anything from an Irish writer that wasn't political.

Re: Masculinity, so fragile

If we're talking about Frozen, I don't know why we're taking about Citizen Kane and not Transformers 3. Because Peterson said that “art” is not political. Citizen Kane is pretty universally viewed as art, while Transformers is not. Strictly speaking, he said art couldn't be created with a political...

Re: Orange is the new President

If the president gets wind of something and wants to see it, there's no legal authority to withhold it. However, access to classified material requires both the appropriate level clearance and the need to know. I can think of any number of specific bits of classified information POTUS arguably woul...

Re: Masculinity, so fragile

Art is anything its creator intended to be art; good art is a very, very tiny subsection of this set. There is nothing per se contradictory about something being both art and intended to serve an additional purpose, e.g., political persuasion. Leni Riefenstahl's "Triumph of the Will" is an obvious e...

Re: Orange is the new President

How does the White House Counsel not yet have full clearance? Is there a scintilla of doubt in anybody's mind that if he wasn't actually the president, Trump couldn't get a hall pass let alone a security clearance? There was a scene in the movie "Tora, Tora, Tora" where the guy in charge of the Mag...

Re: Masculinity, so fragile

I think it naive to believe that the party who can inflict harm and the party who historically can’t see the reality of underlying threat the same way. Lots of people may think about suing as resolution to conflict but put those two people in a car or away from public eyes and ask if a reasonable w...

Re: Masculinity, so fragile

Physical strength of the sort that wins fights is how men have exercised power over women and weaker men since the beginning of the species. I don't see that as particularly controversial or insightful. But we are civilized now. We don't think "I'm going to beat that motherfucker up!" We think "I'm ...

Re: what's so funny about that?

With rare exceptions, Seinfeld spend three or more hours with each guest, then edits the tape down to twenty minutes or so. I doubt he's setting his guests up to do couch jokes so much as that's what comics do; that is, say what they think is funny (including recycling old lines). I agree the coffee...

eh, there are team sports and so a logical delimeter for the teams is nation-state. (like it is for the world cup) (which I'm thinking you don't like either) Two words: corporate sponsorship I'm rooting for the Amazon.com team, then. Their prime athletes can do the cross country skiing in two days ...

I don't care what the temperature is or whether the Winter Olympics were invented so white people could win more medals or whether the North Koreans and South Koreans are dancing cheek to cheek. If it's possible to care less about the Winter Olympics than about the other Olympics, I do. I have nothi...

I might watch the Superbowl if the winners' parade featured the winners marching with the heads of the losers on pikes.
In the case of Philadelphia, fans' heads would be more satisfying.

If he can't be arsed to tow the lion, we're better off without him. Seriously, I'd be very happy if we picked up upwards of a dozen newcomers. We've lost, for various reasons, some of the most interesting and entertaining members over the last five or six years, and I feel that loss. I think DAR is...

Also if you choose to learn a language together, that can incorporate other pasttimes too. Like watching movies in that language, or cooking foods from the culture.
Or picking up hookers and blow in the Barrio.

Logan is good. Strangely, it's not really a superhero movie.

Edit to add: even db might appreciate it.
It's an adult superhero movie. For my money, the best superhero movie to date with maybe the possible exception of the second Dark Knight movie.
