Re: Women in Music

but even when rock was at its zenith in popularity, it was the rare girl who wanted to be in a rock band, doubtlessly because those were rampantly more sexist times, but also because the motivation wasn't there. Singers, yeah. Drummers and guitarists, etc.? Not anywhere nearly as much. That said, I...

Re: Women in Music

Again, I urge you not overlook sex and concentrate on gender. Yeah, all the working musicians you know have some passion for it, probably to their economic detriment, though I can't say I've ever looked at a drummer and thought "now there's a promising prospect to become a CPA." I can tell you what ...

Re: Petty annoyances

So, I have yet to make it past Question 10 on HQ. *sigh* Just a reminder, if anyone else here decides to sign up, mention me, DARidgely, and I get one free wrong question. Even if you don't want to do that, I'd appreciate others just checking it out and letting me know what they think.

Re: Women in Music

I suspect vinyl sales have boosted revenues significantly at this point, too. So, I'll just raise this point about female rock bands; namely, do they have the same reasons for forming a band? Because there are really only two admittedly overlapping principal reasons guys start bands: either because ...

Verne Troyer.
I saw this on twitter a few times, and someone called him "a great actor".

Now, c'mon. He might've been a great guy, but I can't think of anything he was in where I would've said, "Wow, Troyer's performance really moved me!"
Yeah, but when you consider he was really 6'2" ...

Re: Whither the GOP? (post-Trump edition)

Trump has a sui generis set of personality flaws relative to whatever's left of what counts as mainstream Republicanism. He's the drunkard Uncle you are forced to leave the kids with, the one who won't molest them but will let them eat pure sugar and watch TV all night while he hides himself in anot...

It is exactly what people are doing when asked "What's the legal basis for deploying ground troops to Syria?" Pretty much. The post-9/11 AUMF seems to be treated as authorization to get involved in any fight where at least one combatant is either a Muslim or has Muslim friends. ... or is brown.

I'm glad to see Night Court getting its due; I always thought the internet under rated it, overshadowed by Cheers and Seinfeld. (and, once upon a time, Cosby) eta - I am weird though, that I loved Harry Anderson, and I love Dave Barry, but didn't care for Dave's World at all. Apparently, the intern...

TIL that the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young song "Wooden Ships" is a science-fictiony tale about the survivors of a nuclear holocaust; based on the relatively few snippets of lyrics I could catch, I'd always thought it was about hippies dropping out of corrupt American society: Paul Kantner wrote t...

Not that anyone really wanted a contemporary clone of Lost In Space , but we start with the problem that the 'reboot' isn't Lost In Space . I was ready to write it off after three episodes, but I let it run into the fourth episode while paying attention to something else and it somehow caught my att...

Re: Bosch (including season 4 spoilers)

I don't know what you'd consider a successful resolution of those points now that the deed is done. On his best day, Bosch isn't exactly touchy-feely, but the rest of the series does pay attention to both the business and the psychology of the murder of his ex-wife as well as the primary story arc. ...

Kolohe, your comment reminded me that I needed to dive back into that show -- and then I found myself once again getting distracted musing on the economics of Audry's (the house of ill repute, or whatever the modern polite term is). It doesn't seem like there are enough people in Harlan County to f...

It was Hamilton's opinion, fwiw. Also, there's the position that even special prosecutors work for DoJ, which works for the president, who theoretically can fire with impunity anyone in the Executive Branch except the VP.

Re: Orange is the new President

These are uncharted waters, but if a president becomes the subject or target of a grand jury investigation and chooses not to testify while in office, especially if he ends up being an unindicted co-conspirator in a prosecution that results in convictions, I think there is a high probability that a...

This is undoubtedly a big deal for the lawyer, but it means nothing for Trump. If he gets called to testify (he won't), then all he has to do is avoid perjury. His supporters don't give a tin shit if he banged a porn star. If anything it adds alpha-male appeal. Even if he does commit perjury, he's ...
