Re: Stand-Up Comedy as depicted on Amazon Prime

Oh, I forgot. Many comics spend part of their time, especially if they're going short because they didn't get the time-consuming laughter they were hoping for, will "do crowd work," start talking to audience members, sometimes making them the targets of jokes, sometimes just trying to make contact w...

Re: Stand-Up Comedy as depicted on Amazon Prime

I think you can view Midge's stand-up vignettes in general as an attempt to show how a comic with a good bit of material already in her back pocket will get in the groove and be able to improvise over pre-existing material similar to a jazz musician or, yes, an improv group, of which the latter real...

Re: Stand-Up Comedy as depicted on Amazon Prime

OTOH, the "To Kill A Mockingbird" opening was brilliant. Brilliant how? I see that it's a spot on recreation. But I can't make a connection between the hot summer of Maycomb Alabama and the mountain air of the Catskills. I didn't read any significance into it; it just caught me off guard as a anoth...

Re: Stand-Up Comedy as depicted on Amazon Prime

Yes, Bruce's voice was slightly higher pitched. Not as much as you suggest, though, imo. But he *was* a hipster in the original sense, so there's that whole "cool, daddy-o!" quality to his speech patterns and delivery. If you're interested, you should listen to some of his pre-legal troubles recordi...

I didn't pick up on that. What was the TKAM opening?
Opening scene for the first Catskills episode.

Re: Where I talk to DAR about Stand Up Comedy as depicted on Amazon Prime

Better? *shrug* It's your call, I just thought you might want broader participation since I don't think we're the only ones who have watched or are watching the show. I never really analyzed Season One, but I think I've admitted in previous comments here or on FB that my joy was largely driven both...

You might want to change the title of the thread both so others know before they open it and especially since you're not entirely avoiding spoilers.

Re: The author is dead, but is the performer?

Old joke which in its day both men and women laughed at without, as far as I know, feeling the need to deconstruct and criticize it: What's the difference between a diplomat and a lady? If a diplomat says yes he means maybe, if he says maybe he means no and if he says no he's no diplomat. If a lady ...

William Goldman , 87, R.I.P. Goldman was a celebrity screenwriter, one of the earliest in an age when the phrase was still a Hollywood oxymoron; but aside from the work for which he will be best remembered, he was also a dominant force behind the scenes as an uncredited script doctor in, for exampl...

Dolphins are super-rapey, FYI.
I don't think they've been demonstrated to be any more rapey than human beings.
Probably less so if the absence of a dolphin #MeToo movement is any evidence.

Re: Orange is the new President

Genuine question: is there anything illegal about Trump getting rid of Sessions? Shady, maybe, but genuinely breaking any laws? I'm seeing calls on Facebook for protests saying "Trump is not above the law" and I'm just curious if there actually is something "above the law" being attempted. No. All ...

Even the frickin' sermon at the church where I work was all about voting yesterday. Not a mention or a tie-in or anything, just literally ten minutes on why you should get out there and vote. Because white, upper-middle-class Episcopalians are the demographic most in need of being sold on this poin...

If you go to bed when you're sleepy and get out of bed whenever you feel like it, DST isn't a particularly significant issue.
That actually depends on how off-normal you schedule is.

Some things close at 5 PM.
Tomorrow's another day regardless of when it starts.

The thread title kinda makes me imagine Australian gone all Purge against non-voters, what with Aussies online tending to be mega-sanctimonious about how mandatory voting is the only possible rational choice for a liberal democracy. These are the same people who go all disdainful about how the US i...

Re: Vote or Die

I don't encourage anyone to vote, per se, and routinely point out that I rarely do so myself because I think it's both a waste of time and effort and a tacit acknowledgement of the legitimacy of the state. What I have been doing, however, is extorting my many Team Blue friends to realize that if the...

Re: It's all good man!

I lost interest. Then again, I was never a Breaking Bad fan. A show about Saul Goodman's hilarious legal shenanigans might be worth watching, but the paint drying / grass growing paced human interest odyssey that got him there ceased to hold my attention somewhere in the second season.
