Re: Occam, Trump, and Russia

So, does anyone know the legitimate reasons for not releasing the entire report? You mean "legitimate" like "a good reason not to," or "legitimate" like "the actual reason they don't want to do it?" For the former, the only reason would be to defend counterintelligence sources or confidential infor...

Re: Petty annoyances

Keyboard broke. Using really cheap spare. I want another IBM Type M but part of me also wants something wireless. *sigh* And my "new" phone, a Galaxy S8+ is proving hard to get configured as I want it. I'm really hoping it's me and not a defective phone but, for example, when I transferred all my me...

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

People in a phony democracy should believe their votes don't count equally, but merely eliminating the EC won't do more than temporarily favor the Blues. Favoring the Blues isn't the reason I want to abolish the EC; making every vote count equally is. (And my example of the currently 'disenfranchis...

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

The major parties Snap all the rest of the would-be nominees, then expect the electorate to choose between the woman with handguns or the guy with arrows, so it isn't as though getting rid of the EC would per se lead to better presidents.

Re: MARCH MADNESS

So Wofford's star player just broke the NCAA career 3-point record. Sure it's in the Southern Conference, but this just pushed their win streak to 31. But that star's name is Fletcher Magee. The alumni page has been celebrating him all season, and I can't help but hear his name in 1920s baseball an...

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

I know people complain about it, but I don’t think it’s actually why they are mad. This is because you don't find arguments to fairness compelling. But a lot of people do. Not that I'm agreeing with Jason here, but arguments to fairness are much stronger when they're grounded in an articulable, rea...

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

It's more important to Republicans long term. The demographics are definitely against them mid- to long-term, which is again why I'm predicting Texas will be in play before 2030.

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

America was, of course, an agrarian society in the 1780s and even many of those male, white voters who lived in cities had land holdings from which they derived their wealth. (Plus, more than a few would own homes in both the country and city, rather like today.) The politics of the day was all abou...

Bernie Sanders says that he hasn't done a good enough job explaining democratic socialism. He says that "democratic" means "voting on things", and "socialism" means "prosperity".

So basically, he thinks you can just vote yourself rich.
That's how he got those three houses.

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

I don't think there would be much difference in result between a PV vs. an EC. You can't use past elections as any guide since the contests were for EC and not single votes. So looking at past vote totals isn't going to necessarily be indicative of anything. There might be a brief shake up the firs...

It's one thing to say that smaller states should have equal representation in the Senate, effectively giving each voter in New Hampshire greater influence in Congress than each voter in California, quite another to say that the same should hold in electing the only offices for which all U.S. voters ...

Texas isn't as solidly red as you might think. It may take another two or three election cycles to make it a legit battleground state, but Trump is doing his damnedest to make it happen sooner.
