I realize this is a stupid question to anyone who actually knows stuff, but I don't actually know the answer: if the sea level is going to rise, say, two inches, why can't we just build a two-inch-high wall all along the American coastline?
Democrats would block funding.

I'd appreciate it if people would stop using "welp" except to describe a young mammal. Thank you.

Re: Orange is the new President

The weird thing about the last few days is that buying Greenland is probably the least bad idea Trump has had. After all, we acquired something like 50% of the current US land area through purchases. I mean the mores of forcing people to fall under the rule of a new entity that they had no say in c...

If we learned nothing else from the first scene of 2001: A Space Odyssey, it's that all land was stolen from someone else at one point or another and that it's almost certainly the fault of space aliens.

Re: What are you reading?

The problem with natural rights is that rights are nowhere to be found in nature. There is noting objectively, empirically discernible about human beings on a par with, say, the fact that they are a carbon-based life form with a certain average lifespan, that they are language users and tool makers ...

Re: Pick Your Poisson

I'm generally open to trying new foods and new cuisines but, on average, I'd say 80% of the time or more I don't like them as much as my usual foot rota which is decidedly pedestrian. I don't mean "oh, here's a new recipe for chicken," but "here is some stuff people eat with their hands made primari...

Re: What are you reading?

I started George F. Will's The Conservative Sensibility, but I'm frankly bogged down by his reliance on natural rights arguments to make his case. That said, Will's writing is always pellucid if a bit precious for my tastes.

Whatever one's opinion on SWAT and other exceptional circumstances, my view is that if a beat cop routinely carries it on their belt or in their patrol car then we should be able to own it as well, and if we aren't allowed to own it then ordinary cops shouldn't be issued it either. That's crazy tal...

My desktop is significantly older, so if I had a PC that was only three or four years old, I'd start by changing out the power supply and seeing what happens. My biggest single mistake the last time I replaced the power supply in mine was not going with modular cabling. The good news is that if you ...

I knew lots of "Catholics aren't really Christians"" back in the day (and one girl from high school, who went on to attend Liberty University, who also argued that the King James version was the ONLY version of the Bible you could read) -- if that is indeed true, then there were no real Christians ...

Apparently, Quillette isn't well versed in American libel law, the First Amendment or New York Times Co. v. Sullivan . Defamation actions are far more likely to prevail in the UK, as I'm sure her "American lawyer" will advise her. Be that as it may, I'm sure that the threat of litigation will impro...

Because if there's one thing military organizations love, it's armed people who aren't part of their organization hanging around their facilities. What about our friends in Iraq and Afghanistan that we liberated from tyranny? We don't let them wander around secured areas. It's not like it's their c...
