Horrible, Offensive Geekery

Ancient Egyptian didn’t die off because Egyptians died off. It disappeared the same reason American Indian languages died, someone else is running the show and it became largely useless to hold on to the old language. In your scenario, I see English surviving the same way ancient Greek did and for m...

The lengths you have to go to ignore actual monstrous behavior when you write that description ... your view of moral high ground is questionable. The constitution is a little fuzzy on how monstrous someone has to be before he forfeits his da...

Re: Elizabeth Warren's "Accountable Capitalism Act"

Arthur Andersen got the death penalty for something akin to the corporate death penalty described above. The SEC will not accept audited financial statements from convicted felons, Andersen was convicted of a felony* and their main source of revenue was auditing financial statements. However the fel...

Re: Elizabeth Warren's "Accountable Capitalism Act"

Prove a crime point to a criminal and punish that party. Find a civil liability, sue, get punitive if you can make that case. This is designed for cases where you can’t do either of those things and you want crazy lady empowered to grandstand with existential authority. I’m fine with going punitive...

Permits the federal government to revoke the charter of a United States corporation if the company has engaged in repeated and egregious illegal conduct I -- don't actually see why this would be a problem. That seems like it would kind of go without saying, but I guess it ties in with some people's...

Aretha Franklin was great, but she’s no Linda Ronstadt or Kelly Clarkson.

Re: Elizabeth Warren's "Accountable Capitalism Act"

I think if you changed the political donations thing to a simple majority, it would be a defensible move. You would need to include a way for them not having to approve every individual donation, like being able to designate an agent, and possibly requiring that to have a supermajority.

Re: The Abortion Thread

There was a thoughtful article in NR comparing the Catholic Church to what happened in Rotherham (which is being generous to the RCC). This was marred by comments blaming it on the gheys.

The bishop in question would not allow himself to be seated near Chris Matthews at a commencement ceremony because Matthews is a pro-choice Catholic. I honestly misinterpreted Chris Matthews as "Chris Hansen" and thought, yeah, I don't think anyone involved in this story wants to sit down with Chri...

Hrm, I see at least three mistakes. I'd have to rewatch The Fast and the Furious to know if there are four; too much effort. (For one, the FBI agent in TFATF doesn't get his cover fully blown until after the botched last job,, which he wasn't actually involved in. He just shows up after everything'...

I like that he tortures assholes but I'm not going to watch it.

The old Ali G segment where he argues about the street value of drugs with some cop is funny. As is the intro sequence of the otherwise very unfunny Ali G movie.

Re: Orange is the new President

How the fuck did this man get elected president? He hates dogs is the easiest attack ad in the world to make. Longtime Trump observers say it is a measure of his rage and sense of betrayal that he called Manigault Newman “that dog.” The president, who has an aversion to dogs and other pets, consider...

I would like to try them done right to see if I'd like them! I've had them twice and they were horrifying -- slimy texture with a taste like chewing on grass. Yeah-those are definitely the bad ones. For true, lovecraftian horror, try some from a can. Even Cthulu stirs in R'lyeh and thinks 'what the...

Is there any evidence that's the case though? I mean, Megan linked to this in her article , and the guy who studies it doesn't seem to find any clear evidence that insider trading drives people from the markets. That post is nigh ten years old, and up front there could be a known-unknowns problem o...

Weird, I thought the saintly socialist union agitators of the early twentieth century were responsible for the forty-hour work week. Doesn't that prove it's good? This. You have to wonder what history the guy read to come to the conclusion that a work-week of 40 hours/week was 'unnatural'. For most...

I've never made baklava. I actually prefer the Egyptian version in Astoria to the Greek. A little less overwhelming on the sweetness. Have you had feteer with honey? I love that stuff whenever I go to Egypt. It's basically Egyptian crepe, you can have sweet or savory versions. The ones with Egyptia...

The lemons problem . Basically, if people think markets are advantaged by those with significant internal information, then people will be wary about trading in equities because those without insider information will wonder if they're being scammed. This will reduce volumes and the quality of equiti...

Inequality

35 hour work weeks maximize productivity. 50 hour work weeks maximize output. Also, per Jadagul. Being discriminatory is not the most profitable path, but social pressures and path dependence is a thing. Like if you legalized smoking in restaurants, maybe 5-10% allow it. If it was never against the ...
