The Right Way to View Competing Political Horrors

Adam Serwer just spit some hot fire here about the conservative right’s reaction to liberalism. I would question some of it as there are corners of the far left that did go against liberalism for the reasons listed, but the first paragraph is quite the indictment. What is notable is that crisis of f...

Re: The Right Way to View Competing Political Horrors

These people were mad at me and had the temerity to ask me to get fired for speech I disagree with. I dislike their views, so we should ban their speech and kick them out of the country.

Re: Iran (so far away)

The thing that makes it stand out as fishy is the fact that one of the ships that was attacked was headed for Japan and Abe was in Iran. At the very least it seems ill timed and the closest it could possibly be are Houthi rebels. OTOH, KSA makes more sense.

The Right Way to View Competing Political Horrors

If you’re going to talk about balance, then shouldn’t PDs have equal or lower case loads to prosecutors? My point is less about public defenders qua public defenders, but about negative rights requiring positive rights, but somehow not counting as positive rights. The defense of a right should stand...

Ok we are going to do this I guess. The entire libertarian what is a right conversation. I want to reiterate that this is all tangential if touching at all the point that goes like "in nearly all policy discussions that are talking about things that are not basic rights you need to think about grow...

No exterminations or slavery or forfeiture of property to advance a growth goal. Did you just toss eminent domain and capital punishment in with indentured servitude as always and everywhere morally impermissibles? No I'm not modifying the fundamental current understanding of a right to property, w...

Re: Home $weet Home

Why do some people think it’s attractive / a good idea to pay extra money to wrap your appliances in a veneer so they look like your cabinets? That is some ugly looking shit and it isn’t cheap. Ugly is in the eye of the beholder. Cabinet facade doesn't do much for me, certainly not at that price po...

You missed the Andy Ngo part: “Quillette writer Andy Ngo, who called attention to Lenihan’s work on Twitter and whose work Lenihan cites in his article, insisted that the legitimacy of Lenihan’s findings was self-evident from Lenihan’s Twitter posts. “ Ah yes, the self evident methodology that you c...

Re: The Right Way to View Competing Political Horrors

I can’t litigate each proposal here. I’m open to the arguments that say no harm to growth on this but harm to growth on that. My point is there’s an obligation to make those because the effect is so large. Yes I’m operating within a rights framework as a baseline below which trade offs can’t be mad...

The Right Way to View Competing Political Horrors

Clearly not. The correct formulation would be “this is a human right issue of such significance and it self a generator of such suffering that the long run compounded cost to growth and associated suffering is more than justified. Now try that with the minimum wage. Is there firm evidence that mini...

Re: The Right Way to View Competing Political Horrors

I'm more or less Cowenian on growth. It's the greatest engine of suffering mitigation ever to exist on the earth and by such a large magnitude, if you do something you know will cost a half percent of growth to mitigate some near term unrest, you own that suffering over the long term. You have beco...

It’s funny how quickly they forget that they spent the 20 years before Ogberfell ramming through anti-gay marriage bills and constitutional amendments through. Like didn’t they try to force society to bend to their beliefs? Perhaps, much like, “this is how you get Trump,” that behavior is how you ge...

This is one heck of a correction. Correction: This article originally stated that the price of Acthar had gone “from just $40 in 2000 to over $40,000 today.” A spokesperson for Mallinckrodt emailed to request a correction that Acthar actually costs $38,892 today. Gizmodo regrets the error. We also r...

It's well covered ground by now, but my view is that the fundamental essence, the animating force behind much of the left in 2019 is open warfare on speech they disapprove of. The platforms could have ignored. That's social pressure. The market decided not ignoring cost too much. Shit like Josh Hawley's bill means that ignoring is not an option because the enforcement comes from federal agents instead of keyboard warriors.

The left is so bad the government imposing speech codes and balance on companies is not as bad? How?
