the bad things donkeys still don't think they have to beat the guy in an election. Impeach Now was a substantial overreach. Pelosi was correct.
That is largely limited to the Extremely Online set. In 2018 and now, Russia was a relatively minor part of their pitch.

Re: Whither the GOP? (post-Trump edition)

It's a shitty populist vision for this populist moment. If it persists, possibly globally, I will be more and more Nicole inclined over time. My general view has been that the power of stuff moving forward and the effects of economic growth and the billions of people not starving anymore and the he...

Re: Occam, Trump, and Russia

I mean his National Security Advisor and campaign manager went to jail for it, so it's not like there wasn't extremely suspicious going on. Also, Mueller did end up determine that Russians interfered with the election, which was up for debate before the investigation began and was being denied by ma...

Re: Whither the GOP? (post-Trump edition)

If this is the direction the GOP is going, Trumpism looks like a local maxima rather than a local minima. I mean, WTF does this even mean? Yay nationalism to own the people who travel a bunch? We believe home matters. For those who enjoy the upsides, a borderless world brings intoxicating new libert...

Re: Putin on the Writs

Well. The tax cuts only became his thing after the travel ban and the wall and repealing Obama care were his thing. And it became his thing mostly on the strength of the possibility that he could get it. And congress gave it to him because tax cuts are congress' thing. Obamacare was Paul Ryan's thi...

My guests would appreciate that deep lenten cut being catholic nerd types.
I know lots of catholics, but had no idea that people still did the lent stuff. Is that a US thing?
Our Slovakian sitter does Lent stuff too.

Occam, Trump, and Russia

As of now it’s a pile of meh tho right? There doesn’t seem to be anything explosive. I feel like I can already hear engineers moving goalposts all across the land. It’s pretty meh. Though I would pretty much exclude all the obstruction of justice stuff as Barr made that determination and he has sta...

Putin on the Writs

BTW, the fact you’re willing to handwave away Trump deficits and not do the same for his predecessors is why people think you white knight for him. On the deficit, Trump is worse than Bush and Obama qualitatively and quantitatively, full stop. Yeah. Hmm. I think you're over-stating that. How so? TA...

Putin on the Writs

The economic damage of tariffs doesn't last much past the tariffs themselves. On the whole Trump is doing less economic damage than the last two guys. Smooth and/or Hawley would beg to differ. Also, we’re running deficits at levels that are typical of the depths of a recession at the peak of the bu...

Re: Putin on the Writs

Also, we’re running deficits at levels that are typical of the depths of a recession at the peak of the business cycle. So if anything goes wrong, we have no room for counter cyclical responses. Say what you will about the deficit spending of the last two guys, but they shrunk deficits as the econo...

Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

People in a phony democracy should believe their votes don't count equally, but merely eliminating the EC won't do more than temporarily favor the Blues. Favoring the Blues isn't the reason I want to abolish the EC; making every vote count equally is. (And my example of the currently 'disenfranchis...

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

My primary arguments were not about rural vs urban. In fact the reasons I stated would make blue state Rs and red state Ds matter. And take away the focus on a handful of swing states. Granted the fierce partisans (on both sides) focus on the dumb/salt-of-the-earth rural voters and the educated/out-...

Thank God we had a party of economic adults that don’t indulge in free stuff fantasies or we’d end up with the largest deficit in history in the middle of the high point of an economic expansion.

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

I feel like 90% of pro-EC arguments are pure inertia arguments. No, only about 50%. The other 50% is anti-city arguments. I would, in all seriousness, be more sympathetic to "anti-city" arguments if the people making them could offer any firm reason why "city dwellers/the majority dominate country ...

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

I feel like 90% of pro-EC arguments are pure inertia arguments. If we were in a pure PV system for the last 200 years, no one would say the EC is a clearly superior method and we should go back to that. Or that states should adopt weighting by county for gubernatorial races.

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

The worst part is that you need to get ~100% of the population in 10 states vs. the EC route where you just need a bare majority in 11 states.

Re: Electoral College: Yea or Nay?

Aaaargh, the stupid it burns. McMegan argued we need the EC because without it the smaller states could be dominated by the ten most populous states. I suppose the current situation is better because instead you need a bare majority in eleven states.

Re: A thread for mocking politicians

This is now completely crossing over between this thread and the EC one, but I for one don't really give a shit about democracy per se. I care about rights and freedoms. Democracy is kind of a secondary goal, and it tends to be better at protecting rights and freedoms than other forms of government...

If you you’re wondering where Nicole is it’s that she’s masturbating furiously. Also, can we now stop taking Alex Stamos seriously (for non-tech people, he’s the former CSO of FB that supposedly pointed out the Russia stuff was ignored, but continues to defend facebook’s actions). https://krebsonsec...
