Re: Calling 2024 for AOC

Has a 1st term House member ever accomplished anything aside from making noise? That was my reaction to her promise to push through a 'progressive agenda.' Welcome to being a junior member of a sub-committee, AOC, hopefully you'll be able to get some local pork into the F35 authorization bill. She ...

As long as you can keep paying back what you owe by borrowing even more, you can keep kicking the can down the road. If you think that is long term sustainable, I'm not interested in arguing about it. Jason said he agrees arbitrarily high debt is a problem.

She could lay waste to the economy if she means anything she says. Don't you normally bitch about hyperbole? I submit that she's not demonstrably worse than Trump by that strandard. Depends how seriously you take her spending desires on top of what we have now. Yes I agree if she gets nothing she w...

Do we need one thread, let alone two on a backbencher freshman Congresscritter who isn't even a committee chair. Sure, why not? She has a mean social media game and that's about it. FFS, Bernie isn't going to sniff the nomination and I don't think dressing up Bernie as a pretty young woman will do ...

Re: Brexit: what say ye?

This MAY get interesting. The United Kingdom is in crisis after Members of Parliament soundly rejected a withdrawal deal with the European Union and threw the government’s Brexit plan into chaos. The clock is now ticking as Prime Minister Theresa May scrambles for a way out of the Brexit impasse wh...

Not a statement of support or opposition, just a perhaps premature prognostication.
Considering she'll be 35 a week before the election, very premature.

Um, 3D printing is very different from chemical synthesis. After a discussion of 3D printed weapons elsewhere, it's become obvious to me that there are fucktons of people out there who believe, for whatever reasons of cluelessness, that these things are nigh-on Star Trek replicators, and that, Some...

I expect health care costs for many if not most diseases and disorders will plummet as genetic medicine overtakes the current state of the art. For that matter, it's only a matter of time before later generation 3D printers will be able to home manufacture pharmaceuticals. Our great-grandchildren w...

A presumably private, cash-only Canadian hospital operating outside the system is hardly a violation of his principles. It's private, but neither cash-only nor outside the system. They're grandfathered in, so they take private and public insurance both. “This is more fake news on a story that has b...

The first step has to be that they don't get to veto all competition in local markets. Yes, good, fine. The second step is probably something that allows national insurer pools. Okay. I'm increasingly convinced you might need a system that uses a large national entity to backstop catastrophic expen...

If the third party has a) the market power and b) the incentives, you can triangulate provider costs.
If that were true HMOs wouln'd be so fucking horrible.

Between the emergency C and the hospitalization due to a fever under 3 months old, I was an M4 convertible in the hole 6 weeks in. While my situation was not typical, it’s not uncommon.
And you should be able to pay that over time. There's no need for third party payer.

Re: Libertarian Diskanen

I think eliminating employer-provided coverage would go a long way toward doing that. People will be much more aware of the cost/service curve when they have to shop for themselves. And I suspect that doctors would offer cash discounts for routine procedures, up to the point where the only time you...

I'm not sure you can call "any cancer that requires more treatment than cutting it out" an exceptional case. Even the cheap chemo treatments will get you into midsized sedan territory within a few months. Which is considerably less than multiple houses. It's not like you have to pay up front. The d...

Re: Libertarian Diskanen

But what is really needed put market forces to work in health care is to eliminate 3rd party payer. Even if you could stick it into some omnibus bill, I'm not sure how to craft it. I'm absolutely sure nobody wants to hear that. Any attempt to so much as mumble it out loud would be political suicide...
