Re: Stand-Up Comedy as depicted on Amazon Prime

Yeah, I gave Abe a pass for "being on vacation". I however found Rose to be completely believable. She was driven from the Upper West Side from alienation from her family. She couldn't function in her Jewish socialite world while being estranged from her children and husband. Her efforts to connect ...

Re: Inequality

The thing about relocation is that it comes at considerable expense. You do it if the numbers work out but it's absurd to do it without an offer in hand. The idea that you should relocate to look for work is straight up go fuck yourself. I did and it's worked out well for me. You have to make some ...

Re: Surprise! It's Government's Good Side

I obviously have a vested interest in tax advantaged savings - but this is too goofy even for me. Health and retirement saving, MAYBE education - that's it. I will say though, that I'm fine with the idea that there shouldn't be tax advantaged savings if I get to live in the world where nobody cries...

You can do salary on like glassdoor. There is a variance in median barista wages between Cincinnati and Chicago. but it's maybe 10% compared to hyuuge variances in cost of living.
You put too much stock in "like glassdoor" numbers.

Re: Inequality

People with low skills get a much lower skills premium because there's just only so much you can charge for coffee. To wit - barista in Chicago gets same salary as barista in Cincinnati. Cost of living Cincinnati/NKy is 75% of that in Chicago. Are you sure about that? Cause I've seen downtown Starb...

Or they could just, I don't know, lower taxes.
No they have to lower taxes for the upper-middle-class in a way that drives up prices for the unemployed.

THX. I was able to google Plath but couldn't place the reference in the show. I remember the scene now. So I'm googling and all I'm getting is a bunch of half-ass Gilmore Girls shout outs or glorious Easter Egg gems like this 3) Miriam has brown hair. Seriously, go watch the show again if you think ...

Re: Stand-Up Comedy as depicted on Amazon Prime

OTOH, the "To Kill A Mockingbird" opening was brilliant. Brilliant how? I see that it's a spot on recreation. But I can't make a connection between the hot summer of Maycomb Alabama and the mountain air of the Catskills. I didn't read any significance into it; it just caught me off guard as a anoth...

Re: Surprise! It's Government's Good Side

The PHIT Act (how I hate the acronyms used in legislation now) would "allow taxpayers to place up to $2,000 a year in existing Pre-Tax medical accounts for reimbursement of physical activity expenses." It has passed the house and is pending in the Senate. I am all for the government making all of m...

Oh wait, there's bones in there? Well for something that small it almost has to be lamb.

Re: Inequality

I've read many accounts of the Great Depression. Mostly from people not writing about the Depression itself, but simply describing their life at that time. One thing that I've kinda fixated on, is the ways people got through it financially by finding ways to scrape up pennies. Taking in borders, but...

Okay, diving into deep analysis where I don't belong. Here's Lenny Bruce on Steve Allen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3QgxmiBfNY They obviously tried hard to faithfully recreate it for the show, and they did a good job of it. But the side by side comparison, does bring something to my attention. ...

Re: Market Failure!

I remember being a Sailor on liberty over in Spain. Four of us parked ourselves in a bar and whiled away the afternoon drinking rum and cokes. I remember fetching a round and watching the barkeep count in two small ice cubes in each glass, opening a 10oz bottle of Coke a Cola and divvying it up betw...

Re: Food

Here's what you do. Thaw it out. Pound it with a meat tenderizer Season liberally with salt and pepper. Dip it in egg wash. Dredge in flour + paprika + a pinch of cayenne pepper. Fry in oil over med-high heat. Serve with gravy.
Doesn't matter what it was going it, it comes out the same.

Okay. The sister-in-law, the most Jewish of Jews converted to Judaism Jew, I'm not feeling it. She's just awkward and uncomfortable. Her husband, the brother, the MIT super secret government agent, his welcome is wearing out. That set up needs to pay off, and in a satisfying way.

Re: Stand-Up Comedy as depicted on Amazon Prime

For the record the Catskills took up two episodes. There was a passing resemblance to the summer camp I went to as a tween, but "summering" with family at a resort is something I know nothing about. Even so it looked like heaven on earth. If only it wasn't so Jewish :) I did like the Paris episode. ...
