Mountain Dew Zero was only out for a few weeks in the Before Times, but it was a step up from Diet Mountain Dew. I saw that at someone who has been known to plow through 5 or 6 diet dews a day.

Same here. Little or no flavored Coke zero or, for that matter, flavored Pepsi zero. Mountain Dew zero also has vanished.

I'll add a bit of heresy to the burger debate. Please read with the understanding that this is one guy's opinion, and not prescriptive. 1) The correct toppings for a burger are cheese and bacon. Both are optional, but nothing else is needed. 2) 85% lean is the correct beef to use. 3) The melt/non-me...

Much of that was in reference to PPE-that is, N95 type masks. But yes, I do remember that silliness when this first came out. While I understand the WHO and CDC wanting to prevent a run on N95 and, to a lesser extent, surgical masks,* I thought at the time that the implications that masks couldn't h...

You ever notice that Trump never laughs. Like never. Weird. Yes, and that's a no-kidding "something is deeply wrong with this guy" signal in my mind. Leaving politics aside, I tend to think anyone who doesn't at least chuckle is at the very least an unpleasant person, and quite possibly suffers fro...

I claim no expertise and I based my OC on reports of studies or probably just summaries of reports of studies. As to No. 6's point, yes, there has been significant improvement in geriatric medicine, but the upshot of that is also that there are many more old people breaking their hips now. Whatever...

I was taught the 50/50 thing in medic school, and have seen it referenced any number of times since. What I've never seen is the actual source. I'd also expect that to change at least a little, given better medical procedures and generally healthier geriatric populations.

I would guess that the Heinlein novel and the cliche both arose long before heart-lung machines were invented and brain death became the new clinical standard. Re: Random covid-19 observations

"Cardiac Arrest" = his heart stopped. That kinda happens when you die. I'm reminded of an old Heinlein novel—one of his juveniles, of all things—where a kid finds out his uncle died of "cardiac arrest" in police custody. He remembers his dad talking about how that's pretty much any death. This is c...

I've now got "Rocket Queen" by GnR and "I Can't Get It" by Hanoi Rocks fairly well down on the bass. One interesting trick I learned recently for trying to pick out basslines from a recording: adjust the pitch of the entire recording up a whole octave. The guitars and vocals become very thin and ti...
