One gritty reboot of a silly show (BSG) is enough.
I didn't say gritty, I said adventure.

Re: It's not the size of the screen...

I am amused at the idea of Parker Posey as Dr. Smith. Otherwise, yeah nothing there looks good. As far as I'm concerned, there's one sensible casting for Dr. Smith: http://www.actonthis.tv/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Rowan-Atkinson-to-play-Mairgret-680x453.jpg But nobody would reboot Lost in Space t...

Re: Masculinity, so fragile

I wouldn't go so far as Jason, but that's enough contrasting extremity to make me risk turning into Cathy Young. I just do my thing and get happier when people seem to appreciate it, less so when they don't. (At the risk of triggering reactions, though, I will acknowledge that I say this as a guy, s...

Re: Petty annoyances

I knew it was all a misunderstanding of some sort, but -- what the fuck? So, if I were black (or if being white wasn't enough to make me massively stand out here), we actually might be evicted? Over something neither of us had a damned thing to do with??! That’s not all that shocking. They had info...

i dunno i think you guys hung out in the wrong parts of culture town. That's kind of my take on the reaction to the Black Panther reaction, here. I don't run in SoCal academia, so maybe I'm missing the big picture *cough* , but I'm not seeing many people, even superhero geeks, wetting themselves at...

Re: I may want to see that?

The Communist murders were also far less thorough --the gulag for all its horror wasn't an extermination camp. Jews in Soviet Russia and Commie Europe in general certainly had a bad time of it with some of them being murdered, but Communism never tried to systematically wipe all ALL of them the way...

No.

Re: To Infinity War and Beyond: the MCU Thread with Spoilers

I have tried to watch Captain America: Civil War a number of times and just cannot get into it. Mainly what bugs me is that the central conflict between Captain America and Iron Man feels completely unnatural. It really feels to me like it should be the other way around. Steve Rogers being all, "Go...

Re: Horrible, Offensive Geekery

The problem is that I didn't know emacs had a package manager until, like, a week ago. And until today this computer was still running 23.3, which doesn't work with MELPI. Once I updated, things started working pretty well. There's just a ton of functionality I didn't know about. I mean, of course ...

Re: Horrible, Offensive Geekery

Now I'm adjusting some other things I didn't know about. I hadn't actually updated my emacs in years, and so I didn't have a lot of the packages, and I didn't have things like markdown-mode and bbcode-mode. So now I'm modernizing. When I'm in front of my computer, I can throw you some specifics abo...

Woo that guy murdered and starved and imprisoned a lot of people guys. He's at least the Dan Marino of totalitarian murderers and I give him no credit for intent. His inadvertent starvation is just as bad as his deliberate actions. If we are playing hypotheticals, does a hitler win preclude a stali...

Re: Horrible, Offensive Geekery

Edit: it seems like what I wanted is visual-line-mode or something like that, right? Now I just need to go through and set things up so I get visual-line-mode in text-centric formats where I want that, and get the classic auto-fill-mode in my TeX hooks where I actually want that. Lemme check my ini...

Re: Mixed doubles curling and other stuff - Olympics thread

I realize that 90% of my disdain of figure skating was my younger self not distinguishing it from ice dancing, which is largely a bullshit sport. Make it "Five a Side, Full Contact Ice Dancing" and I might watch. And the man in the back said, "Everyone attack!" And it turned into a ballroom blitz...

If the commercials weren't effective then the advertisers wouldn't be able to afford to run them. With a $40 price tag on what's probably a $5 bear, you don't need many hits to come out ahead. Especially when you're advertising on what is essentially the Dogpatch Herald of the TV world. After all, ...

In the category of "Fruits That Kill With Gravity" I really like jackfruit. It hits all of the right notes. Tropical, floral, texture is interesting but not slimy. Bonus: if you buy a whole one you can break out the machete to get into it. If you don't like juicy fruit gum this is not the fruit for...

Tangentially, I was at a Thai place when the old lady in charge offered me a durian dessert.

I tried it, but I couldn't get into it.

Pretty much the rest of the world, as I understand it. People I know who have lived in Japan and South America have said it's very difficult to find there..
How does that work with Thai cooking,, though?
