Re: Light laffs

Hrm, I see at least three mistakes. I'd have to rewatch The Fast and the Furious to know if there are four; too much effort. (For one, the FBI agent in TFATF doesn't get his cover fully blown until after the botched last job,, which he wasn't actually involved in. He just shows up after everything'...

That story is entirely too pat for me to, well, digest. It reeks of contrarian bias in the face of the general take on food anthropology as I understand it - which is always and forever you are trying to solve for regular supplies of calories and each iteration of food in society would not happen i...

Re: Random Observations C.A (306 pages is enough)

Unrelated, there needs to be a term for the situation where someone points it that one side of an debate is doing something, someone on that side denies that thing is happening, and immediately , a pile of people on that side start justifying that exact thing that "isn't happening". Giulianing? Was...

Re: Inequality

I'd counter that hunter-gatherer existence was better when population densities were low and food was plentiful. When population densities were rising, I bet it really wasn't better for the people who weren't switching fast enough to a primarily agricultural way of life (as many hunter-gatherer soc...

Re: Inequality

Weird, I thought the saintly socialist union agitators of the early twentieth century were responsible for the forty-hour work week. Doesn't that prove it's good? This. You have to wonder what history the guy read to come to the conclusion that a work-week of 40 hours/week was 'unnatural'. For most...

Re: Random Observations C.A (306 pages is enough)

I'll just say that I understand the instinct to deplatform, but the who gets to decide thing is the whole thing and it is too scary to entertain, plus I do think that it is at a basic level healthy to have those voices in the open and responses to them constantly in the mix. It is very much my sens...

Re: Random Observations C.A (306 pages is enough)

And yet, it's the society we live in. Which should be your first fucking clue that doing anything to help society, where the likes of McCarthy are a Hell of a lot more influential than you or me, establish the kind of line you so wistfully talk about is incredibly stupid. ETA: I mean, what is your ...

Internet confession: tonight I was reading stuff about transphobia and getting really depressed, and then the thought popped into my head: "TERFs can suck a dick. A lady's dick" and it amused me way, way, way, way too much
Ha!

But who knows where those TERFs' mouths have been?

Re: Random Observations C.A (306 pages is enough)

As someone with a dedication to maintaining the best possible connection to something approximating what actually happened in the past, some things shouldn't be up for debate. Where the line goes is a worry, certainly, but that fact alone doesn't mean there shouldn't be a line. There should be a li...

Re: Random Observations C.A (306 pages is enough)

Who said Shem was calling for coercive regulation? If CBS gave holocaust deniers an hour of prime time, businesses would pull ads so fast that there would be sonic booms. Because he used what looked like the governmental pseudo-first-person "we" instead of "advertisers" or "stockholders" or whatever.

My view is that some politicians are less dishonest than others, and that's a good reason to see some as lesser evils, but all of them need to be monitored.
This is a stance I'm fine with.

He should have been stopped decades ago, but our institutions are frail. And the very frailty erodes trust, which leads to a cynical belief that the whole system is about guys like him getting ahead so what does any of this matter anyways? I see no chance that the Dems will nominate anyone whose administration won't be more damaging than the current one. Uh-huh. Are you still of the opinion Hillary would've been even worse than the president we've got now? We are not at war, so yes 10,000 times better. I don't know if shit like our p...

Re: Op-ediots

Now, I suppose you could measure optics by polls. Compare Approval Rate - Disapproval Rate for presidents. We couldn't do that for HRC, but BHO ended up with a net of +17.9 at the end of his term, versus Trump's current rating of ...-8.6. OK, so that doesn't allow "x% better/worse" comparisons, than...

Re: Op-ediots

My view on that for the record is HRC would be 25% better in official policy and 100% better in optics. I think there's a lot of people who think the optics are so bad its more like 150% / 200% and I would resist that view. I'm not sure you go about ascribing numerical values to policy differences ...
